240's always worked well in my 308. I think I shot 4 or 5 and the standard exit wound looked like a knife wound (sometimes shaped like the bullet outline undeformed). 220 hornady RN would exit with a ragged hole about twice the diameter of the bullet--shot 6 or so with that round. I've only tagged one with the 300W using 220 SMKs, it passed through the chest cavity like the 240's.

I'd like to try the Outlaw bullets, but I haven't brought myself to pay that much for pills. They're as expensive as my 50cal pills and I haven't gotten over the sticker shock yet.

How did you guys modify the SMK's above? Drill, sander, file? Was it a pain in the ass to get the weights consistent?

mine are not SMKs, they are a prototype bullet made by a friend, designed specifically to expand at slower velocities. same concept as the outlaw bullets but a different design

I went w/the 240 Outlaw and am very happy. See my other post,http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8308

Yeah they are a little over priced but they leave a nice exit wound

It is easy. A few minutes. Dremmel with the little carbide cutting wheel. Cut the tip off. (like butter) Then use a small drill bit, then a little bigger drill bit if you want it a little bigger HP. Hand file and polish. The only setback is they don't feed consistent enough in my AR. So I hand feed it and the clip is stacked with stock OTM's. The first shot is all you need. If not. Stick him with a pointy one, on a follow up.

For as much money that you would have in time and material, you could have the real thing.

Wow, I wouldn't have even attempted to shoot a deer with a 90 XTP. Glad to know it worked. Did it explode halfway through the chest or did you make a headshot? What kind of velocity are you getting with that load?

90 grain TSX with trailboss...I bet that's beyond movie quiet. You've got to share some info on performance, especialy if it was a shot to the chest cavity. Congrats

To put it into perspective, this is what you killed a deer with. Damn! Everything I read says my 25-20 is not a hunting cartridge, but is shoots a 75 gr bullet at a little over 2000 fps. It puts quarter size holes in coyotes @ 100 yds. I may have to get it out. I say good job. Shot placement would have to be critical and you must have that down.

I dont know about 25/20 but I have always thought a deer cartridge was what ever you could shoot accurately with a good bullet was a deer roud ( we used to butcher beef with a .22lr Hp behind the ear.....shot placement and bullets are what kills....
