.250 Savage IA built...need opinions and recommendations

Gents,

I've been away from the forum for some time and am just getting back. My .25/06 Ruger #1V shot wonderfully, but I let it go and have started looking to build a light high grade rifle. I'm considering either the 250 Savage or the 250 Savage AI. I have no experience with either and would like to know what owners of that cartridge think of it, the good, the bad, and the ugly of the round.

Living here in western Oregon the .250 is a perfect cartridge for our blacktail deer. Most of my hunting has been done with .30 cals or 7mm's...they work perfectly.

What I'm looking for is a lightweight rifle for "walking around" with enough "hootus" to do the job, but able to be chambered in a short actioned custom rifle.

Steve Nelson, in Corvallis, has built a number of 250/3000's and it's a often requested caliber.

The way it standands now we would use a shortened G33/40 M98 small ring Mauser action that is shortened and built specifically for that cartridge. Barrel will be a Krieger. Stock will be high grade English Walnut.

It will be scoped with a Leupold scope in custom Rings/Mounts.

I'd like to hear about your thoughts/opinions on the cartridge and project.

Obviously, I'm not looking for a long range varminter, but a light "handy" rifle that is accurate and able to double as a varmint rifle and light game rifle.

Thanks,

Wes
