Long barrel 22LR rifles with Aguila SSS ammo

Aguila SSS ammo is a 22LR length a made with a case very similar to a 22 short with a 60 grain cast lead bullet. It resembles a parabolic nose rebated boattail though the boatail is not tapered, it just fits into the case. There is very little room left and there is just enough moderatly fast powder to drive the bullet to around 1000 fps in a 10" barrel. The bullets are was coated so the bore friction is low and they don't loose much velocity in a long barrel.

There is a seller on Gunbroker who is selling 29" 22LR barrels which fit a Ruger 10/22. They're $159.00, with the breech end tapererd like a standard 10/22 barrel, then nearly straight to the muzzle. The manufacturer is at:
http://www.urbanriflesupply.com.
The barrels are blued carbon steel, appropriate for a 22LR.

I bought one of them to see how well they work. Shipping was prompt, everyting went smoothly, and the barrel had a good fit and finish.
The seller claims they are "very quiet" and I suppose the are compared to a typical factory 10/22 barrel but there is a major problem with the concept. That problem is that the breech block on a 10/22 opens before the bullet is very far down the barrel. There is a fairly loud report which comes from the breech from the propellant gas escaping still under pressure.

I also have a CZ 452 Lux 22LR bolt action with a 27" barrel (bought for the same reason) which is much quieter overall. How much I can't say exactly but I'd guess 20 to 30 db quieter. Muzzle blast and bullet flight noise is probably the same for both rifles, both of which are much quieter than the breech blast on the 10/22. The 10/22 with the 29" barrel is quite enough to shoot without hearing protection but that's not saying a lot.

I'm just giving a bit of warning for those who might consider buying this barrel. The above website has video clips of various rifles shooting various ammo but it doesn't give a realistic comparison of the sound. I doubt it's intentionally faked, just the limitations of a typical camcorder's audio performance.

I''ve not made velocity or accuracy comparisons. I just shot the 10/22 for the first time today.

Another warning is that both barrels have 15" twists. The 60 grain SSS ammo may not be stable in dense air. I shoot at over a mile elevation in Arizona and have no stability problems in any 22LR that I've shot the SSS ammo in.

The SSS ammo in any closed breech action starts to get quiet with barrels around 24". I think that's about where the propellent gasses expand enough to be subsonic out of the muzzle. The expansion ratio of the CZ Lux rifle with the Aquila SSS ammo is around 100:1

Shooting the CZ Super Lux with any subsonic ammo is ridiculous. It doesn't even feel like you are shooting a rifle. I wanted the long barrel for the long sight radius with irons, but the quietness is a welcome side-effect. Maybe you can have some sort of bolt-lock made for the 10/22?

bolt cycle

Does the longer length help with the bolt cycling?? That stuff is SUPER quiet; but, the bolt will not cycle in my 10/22.

If you want to shoot quietly without the expense and hassle of a registered suppressor a long barrel 22LR bolt action is not rediculous. Using a 10/22 with a bolt lock IS rediculous by comparison. I bought my 27" CZ becaused it does shoot the Aguila SSS ammo very quietly. I could care less about sight radius because it has a scope. Sure, it shoots supersonic ammo well too, but there a barrel over 16 or 20 inches gives little advantage.

There are 2 or 3 different bolt locks available for the 10/22. Those long barrels by urban rifle supply were made for quieter rounds than the SSS. Just saying is all.

No, it doesn't . Don't confuse the Aguila SSS ammo with the Aguila Colibri ammo. The Colibri ammo has about half the wegiht bullet and about half the powder charge of the SSS. I bought a box of Colibri and it doesn't cycle any semi auto I own. It works ok in bolt actions and single shots but the light bullet has a low BC. I consider it a "gallery" charge suitable shooting indoors or plinking mice in a barn. It is quieter than the SSS ammo, but I consider it pretty useless.

The SSS ammo with a 60 grain parbolic nose bullet is accurate to 200 yards and usable to 400 yards. The 60 grain subsonic bullet carries about 1/3 the energy of o 220 grain subsonic 300wtf at 100+ yards. I willl go through a pine 2x4 in the 4 inch direction at 25 yards. It cycles any 22LR I've tried it in including two 10/22s ( 16 and 29" barrels), a 22" Marlin 60, and in several semi auto pistols with 4" to 12" barrels. All of them cycle ok. On blow-back actions (which almost all 22LR's use) the bolt starts moving as soon as the chamber pressure rises. Barrel length simply makes no differece to how most semi-auto actions cycle with the SSS ammo. Some stiff actions which need high high energy 22LR might not.

With a semi-auto with a barrel 22" or longer most of the noise comes from the breech blast, not from muzzle blast. The breech blast occurs in any blow back 22LR, but with shorter barrels the muzzle blast is more noticable. The SSS case is the same length as a 22 short, so the breech opens with less bolt movement than with normal 22LR cartridges.

The SSS ammo does have stability problems at sea level in cold weather with 15" twist barels. It's got excellent accuracy at the mile elevation year around where I shoot from 15" or 16" twist barrels. 9" twist barrels are available for 10/22s which will stabilze SSS ammo even in sub zero temperatures at sea level. I have a 16" 10/22 barrel which shoots ok too, but it's louder than the 29" barrel having both muzzle blast and breech blast. The Marlin 60 also has breech blast louder than muzzle blast.

Bottom line is if you want a quiet rifle to shoot Aguila SSS ammo use a bolt, lever, or single shot action with a 24" to 30" barrel (or with a suppressor). Revolvers aren't quiet because of the blowby at the front of the cylinder.

AR-15's like the 300wtf work because the breech doesn't even start to unlock until the bullet has passed the gas port and the bullet is far past the muzzle before the case is extracted from the chamber. A 300wtf howver won't be very quiet even with a 30" barrel. It has too much chamber capacity to give enough expansion ratio to make the propellant gasses subsoinic at the muzzle.

Sorry, I meant that in a good way. As in "ridiculously quiet." I love shooting my CZ with subsonics. I have not shot the 60 grain Aguila's yet out of it because I was worried they may not make it out of that long barrel. They shoot fairly well out of my 10/22, are stable at 100 yards, and cycle the action. I just may have to give them a try in the CZ.

Please give us your impression of how the sound of your CZ compares to your 10/22 shooting the Aguila SSS ammo. You don't have to worry about the SSS lubricated cast bullets sticking in the bore.

What are the barrel lengths of your CZ and your Ruger?

Ruger is 18" stock barrel, CZ is 28" barrel. Aguila 40 gr. match ammo is very accurate in the 10/22, and I shoot it sometimes in the CZ when I don't have anything else, though it doesn't shoot that well in that rifle. There is a pretty big difference in sound. The 10/22 sounds like... a .22. The CZ sounds like a pellet gun. I'll shoot some 60 Aguila's in both rifles side by side this coming week.

I was out last weekend and shot my CZ452 Special with a 25" barrel over my Oehler Model 33 chronograph with some of the Aquila SSS ammo and others. I was getting 1" groups with the SSS and 3/8" to 5/8" with regular subsonic and supersonic ammo. Temps were about 90 degrees at 1100' altitude. Here is my chrono results:

Bt Wt Ammo Bt Type Vel SD NOTES
40 AGUILA RNL 1030 20 AGUILA SE (STANDARD VELOCITY)
60 AGUILA RNL 894 17 AGUILA SSS
40 CCI RNL 1010 20 CCI STANDARD VELOCITY (SV)
40 CCI HPL 1045 35 CCI SUBSONIC HP. BOLT CLOSES TIGHT
40 RUSSIAN RNL 975 21 RUSSIAN SNIPER
40 WIN TCHPL 1007 4 WINCHESTER SUBSONIC TCHP
42 WIN TCL 1136 7 WINCHESTER SUPER SILHOUTTE
40 WIN RNL 1192 7 WINCHESTER T22

I was expecting the SSS ammo to be a bit closer to 1000 fps. The light was right and I could watch the bullets fly to the target from about 50 yards on out to 100 yards. I also shot some out to 200 yards and saw a couple loose stability around 150 yards

Shoot Straight,
