would it be possible to start a thread and make it a sticky for a regional ak build party? for example it could go by state or multiple states in clusters ( i.e. n&s dakota and minnesota)

Sure, I will be lad to help you out... My board doesn't get the kind of trafic some of the others sites may get for you but I will be glad to give you guys a place to hang out...

See if you can get some interest and what I may do is start a new forum for "Build Teams" or something like that to have threads where they work together...

thank you I apreciate the offer.
my offer still stands if any one in the area wants to get a build going e-mail or p.m. me and we can get the ball rolling.

I really wanted to start the build teams thread here because this site has the most complete information I have found so far!! and every one here, exspecally you quarterbore, have taken the "vodo-magic, turn three circles and do a rain dance " mistery out of doing a ak build!
the only problem I have so far is I had no idea there were so many speciality tool involved and that is going to bust my budget to get a build done!! oh well all for the love of the a.k.

I am no expert.... 555th here on the forums has forgot more about building AKs then I have yet to learn... My latest two builds do look pretty good but there are many ways to build these and the tools and methods I am using are limited by the time I have had to try new ways.

If you are only doing one or ver few builds a 100% receiver is much easier and much less tool intensive then building from a flat. I still couldn't imagine doing one without a press but lots of guys do it without one... Just the same, a dremel, a small drill press, and a press are the basic tools you need. A little nicer looking results come with some of the various jigs and other tools... etc...

QB,
You give me way to much credit.

sluggermn,
quarterbore has piled alot of excellent info on this site. I'm here usually every day and will help you out all I can. QB is right, if you want to build one or two, 100% recievers would be easiest. I started building using homemade recievers and have gotten alot of satifaction out of building my own reciever. My best advice for someone starting out is to buy kits now and take your time and learn from the different boards. Hopefully in that time period you can find someone close to you and share the expense of tooling. Remember that most tools can be sold for about what you paid for them after you're finished.......BUT start out buying kits now, Those will be the hardest to find and most expensive part of building in the future. If you think you'll build three, buy six....tools will always be out there and there's always someone getting out of AK building and selling off some tools.

thanks for the encouraging words 555th
I plan on making my own bending jig from your plans and we have three sizes of brakes at work, I work at a metal fab company and they are pretty leinant about using their eqpt for personal use. in fact my boss's boss is entering your blue prints into the cad machine this week to laser cut the pieces for your jig.
and next week I am going to hit him up to enter the rivet press plans and cut a few of them too.

now if I could just get the blue prints for xebec's barrel press and I would just about have it made!!

I will keep you posted on the progress of jigs and the build ( gonna be a slow process at this point)

Keep that thought in mind....

SNIP, again
>My best advice for someone starting out is to buy kits now and take your time and learn from the different boards.

I have read a bunch and copied many pics from here 'n thar so I feel relatively confident when starting to build a kit. I have built 1919s, ARs and other stuff and have nothing but thanks for the fine people who post their ideas and tips.

and SNIP, again
>BUT start out buying kits now, Those will be the hardest to find and most expensive part of building in the future.

555th must be clairvoyant, now with the DOJ screwing with us again over barrels now, there will be a definite shortage of complete kits. Get what you can.

>If you think you'll build three, buy six....tools will always be out there and there's always someone getting out of AK building and selling off some tools.
If you can afford it, put money in kits instead of in the bank. DPH is selling Grade C kits for 80 buck or so. Buy as many of them as you can afford. Once you build and blackerize them, they will look the same as others. And your finished kit is now like gold.

Now go back to the comment I made way above. Yes, there is a certain amount of satisfaction out of bending your own flat into the receiver. What was that about money in the bank - can you sell your home made kit without a serial ? If you build it from a 100% receiver, then you can sell it at any time and recoup your 'investment' when you "get tight for money".

And then some....

I'm not saying that you should go into business building kits into finished toys but you should consider keeping your options open.

Roger
