510 is a runner at last.....

I've been working toward getting one of these things shooting for a long time but the long action required and gargantuan size of the loaded round make life difficult. The 300's worked well and kept me happy for a while but the 12.7X48 was the goal and at the SHOT show last year the rifle I needed showed up. Its a Desert Tactical SRS bullpup with a switchable barrel setup. It was designed for 338 Lapua Mag originally but was made to use a 300 win mag, 308 win or 243 by changing the barrel, bolt and mag as required. Since the 12.7X48 is based on the .338 lapua case this was ideal for me. I had a 1:9 twist .50 cal barrel for a blank and the rifle showed up on my doorstep a couple weeks ago so with a bit of late night labor the barrel got done. The suppressor also got started but no baffles as yet. Test firing was accomplished today with the empty suppressor can and all 6 rds I have brass for. The result was outstanding. The empty can did a remarkable job of suppressing the noise to the point where no muffs or plugs were needed. The API bullets put a pretty good dent in the armor plate we shot even at only 1000 fps. All in all a good test and looking forward to getting more brass made up so we can shoot more than 6 shots.

That is great...I have 2 SRS rifles (dont care for changing barrels lol) and never thought about doing one in 510. If I didnt already have a 510 beauty that Spook built me I would be all over this. I am guessing this is single shot as the SRS mags are tapered? Out of curiosity what would a barrel cost?

I hadn't really looked at the cost of these since the 2 I'm doing are are really for myself and a good friend. I'd guess in the $900-1200 range which is about the cost of any of the DT barrel setups only without a spare bolt. The mags are indeed a problem since they use the shoulder of the .338 or 300 winmag round to index the rounds in the mag. That shoulder prevents the 510 projo from fitting in the mag. It is possible to modify the mag so the larger round would fit though as the mag well has plenty of room there. I'm going to have to blow $100 for a spare mag to modify for testing. I'll post info when I get there. At the moment I don't have enough ammo to need a mag and probably won't until after the machinegun shoot in Wyoming in June. All efforts are going into loading ammo and belts for the shoot right now.

There is a plan to build up a .338 BR barrel for the rifle as well. Brass once again has proven to be the issue though as remington apparently only does one run per year of the 30BR brass and it goes quick. I do have the reamer and dies though so once I've got brass I'll get rolling.

I didn't get any pictures on Sunday of the new barrel and rifle. I did get the barrel done, thanks a lot for that blank Spook. It worked very well and so did the now complete suppressor. We were shooting at 250yds and all rounds went where they were supposed to. The APIT bullets actually lit up and flashed nicely when they hit the steel plates. The M1 incendiery bullets flashed very nicely too. I'll try to get some pics on wed but we've been frantically trying to get ready for the shoot in Wyoming the first weekend of June along with normal work.

Thanks again Spook

Here are a couple pics of the second rifle and its barrel. One shot with the .338 barrel installed and the 510 barrel on the floor and one with the 510 barrel installed. Nice short package that is about the same length with the suppressor installed as the Sako TRG42 is without anything.....44" with the 510 barrel and suppressor, 48" with the 338 and appropriate suppressor...

Finally got some decent pictures of the 510 firing in the second rifle with the suppressor which I finished last night and tested today. It works fantastic. Rifle is very impressive and so is the 510. Tried a different powder today-H4227. At 27.1gr it was transonic, 28.5gr was just supersonic. Same loads with 2400 were right at 1000fps and N110 was about the same. Didn't get to chrono the 4227 but it looks like it might be a good powder for supersonic loading. Takes up about the same amount of space as the 2400 but seems to be getting more speed. Not a lot of space left in the case but with the 650gr API's or the 605gr APIT's we should be able to get 1200fps or so. With the 28.5gr load they would flash on impact with the ground. Slower loads only flashed when they hit hard targets.
Looking good so far and a lot of fun.

Frank
