USMC 1991 Sheath Question

Hi all, New to the M9 bayonet world. Can anyone tell me if the sheath for the 1991 USMC contract had a strap at the guard and one around the handle or only the one around the handle. Thanks in advance. John

It came with both straps like the phrobis one..If it has the strap close to the bottom of the upper scabbard it probably was replaced due to the old webbing being bad..I had one that was like yours. It was a lancay replacement part.

Be also careful to check for a "raised plate" on the scabbard, which should be present on all the Buck USMC 1991 M9s, as shown in the picture below

Gentlemen, Thank you for your input. It helped in my choice. I have been looking at the two different offerings. I have ordered some books,but still waiting on them. It seems the M9 has a history of many minor changes, both required and by chance, through it's lifetime. Each of the manufactures also had a lot of versions. I have two each of PHROBIS, LanCay and a Ontario. Is there one overall best book that goes into the details of the variations? M9's are addictive. I'm sure there are a lot more questions I'll be asking. It is great to share one's knowledge with others.

There isn't really a good book on the M9. The latest entry, American Gladius, is in my opinion lacking complete information and decent photographs. There are also some definite errors in the information provided. Gary Cunningham's book provides decent but limited information. Homer Brett's book shows many of the scarcer variations but has very little information on the common variations.

Your best bet as a beginning collector is to read all of the threads on this site. The combined information found here far surpasses any available book on the subject.

Thanks for your input on books. I have Gary Cunningham's and have ordered the American Gladius. I will look for Mr. Brett's book. I am still looking at threads. There is a great amount of facts available here. I guess that someone will put the puzzle together, in the correct timeline, and have themselves a great selling book.

THere you go Bill, a little project for you, Carlo and Mr Moon, I think between you you shoudl be able to piece together the whole story and much better than the Gladius book. Not sure if i really wnat to go into that much detail on my site, and I have too many other projects. This woudl be a great CD based book as there are so many twists turns and pictures that a book woudl be very expensive, trouble is no one will pay much for a CD based book, no matter how good and packed with pictures.
