The story with the BATFE running around collecting parts kits had to do with changes in the legal requirments for the ways manufacturers where supposed to demill kits. Years back the requirements to demill kits were more relaxed and it was legal for importers to take a chop say to a rifle to cut it into pieces as a way of demilling it.
Problems occured as some people, who don't like their freedom I might add, went through and welded these chop saw demilled kits back together amd made functional machine guns. The BATFE addressed this by tryng to claim that these chop saw cut kits were now illegal and they changed the laws regarding the way that these kits needed to be demilled.
If you look at the photos of
my Bren Mk 1 kit, my kit was clearly cut with a torch. This kit is completely legal and the letter that follows is in regards to kits that were cut with a chop saw (or so I understand)!
It took some effort but I was able to find the old thread where this letter came from... It also includes some other letters as well as some notes that I had posted regarding a LONG phone call I had with the BATFE about this letter and my kit...
Well worth the read!!!
