Lathe Lube and other ?'s
Hello Guys,
I recently purchased a Logan 821 Metal Lathe. I have a few questions. First, the stepped
flat pulley on the headstock can move side to side about 3/8". Is this normal or is a spacer
or bushing or something missing.
Where does one get SAE 10wt oil? I can't find it anywhere. I need it for the apron and
other various lube points. What about the drive gears for the autofeed on the left side of the
headstock. What does on use to lube those? I believe the book calls for a mixture of oil and
white lead or something weird like that? I believe I read somewhere about dry graphite
lube? What is the best lube for these gears.
Also, the headstock bearings seem dry. There is no slop. I have cleaned them out, the
old grease was all dried out. What should I replace it with? I have a handy dandy syringe I
use for repacking standard bearings. I have some valvoline wheel bearing grease. It rather
sucks, it separates after about a month. I alos got this napa wheel bearing grease which
doesnt separate. Also got some Metalcote 4-1656 Wheel bearing grease. This stuff is old
stock and considerably thicker then the other greaese. If I had to guess its out of the 50s or
60s. What is the best grease to use? I'm concerned about the thinner greases leaking
through the grease seal.
Please dont tell me to just buy new bearings. The reatiner nut on the end of the spindle
shaft is just a threaded collar and its punched onto the shaft. There is no conceivable way to
remove it without damaging the threads.
Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason
