Ar15 Build Questions.

OK, new project and I need some advise.

I am going to build a 300 whisper on an Ar15 platform. I am sick of carrying a levergun around on our hog doggin trips. Then when I get there they just blast my ears.

The rifle is a DPMS it will be a 16" barrel and will be suppressed.

Should I build it myself other than having the barrel threaded or the quick release for the suppressor? It seems that all the parts and even barrels are easily obtainable.

Should I buy an upper like the Olympic Arms or something similar? Would it shoot decent?

Should I send it to a smith and let them deal with it (slow way and I am a right now sort of person)

Should I let SSK industries do it because they came up with it to start with?

Now, the vast majority of my shots with this rifle will be point blank range. I am a little concerned with bullet performance on a hogs head at point blank range. Velocity will be in the 1000FPS range at impact. I am mostly concerned about riccochets and hitting the dogs.

Also, even though the majority of the shots will be at point blank, I hate to limit myself to that. I might occassional shoot an exotic or something else.

I will most likley be using the 220 or 240 SMK. Any thoughts on this bullets performance under 1000 FPS?

Thanks for the advise!

Qzilla,

Although I would love to tell you to build your own, (I've built quite a few, including my own 300 whisper) if that would be the only one, you would wind up with more money and time in it than if you just bought a complete upper/lower or rifle.

I would HIGHLY recommend getting in contact with Tony at www.del-ton.com. He is a great guy, sells excellent products, AND sells them at a great price. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. Before making a choice, at least call him and talk to him. He'll sell you individual parts or assembled parts, your choice.

Call me nuts, but "point black" . . . what about hard-cast, as-blunt-as-will-feed bullets as long as will stabilize in your barrel?

Are you the do it yourself kind of person?
Are you a pay for it and wait kind of person?

I am a do it myself person. I would rather do the research, find the parts, tinker with it myself. I mean to get what I want I need to do the research anyway.

Suppressors, I bought a Gemtech HVT QD in 308. I like it. I wanted a 308, so I got a 308. But Gemtech says a 9mm can will do the trick also for a 300-221.

I have been gel testing bullets. I plan on posting a more detailed post once I finish my testing. The 220gr and 240gr Sierra Match kings tumble making a nice large slice through the gel. It leaves no permanent hole.

A suppressed 45ACP 230gr JHP would be a little louder, but may actually have better terminal effect.

For those of you that don't mind the crack of a super sonic round when shooting suppressed, I have tried fast and light and also mediums. Although I am not finished testing, I think the best terminal performance will come from the mediums.

As far as the hard casts go, forgetaboutit. Suppressors and gas guns don't do well with melted lead and bullet lube.

If you are use to shooting large hogs in the lungs with a 45-70 and watching them drop, you might be disapointed with the little 300-221 in subsonic.
