I don't think you'll have clearance even using M4 handguards without the shields. Just grab a YHM lightweight handguard and you will be set. If you just have to have the traditional look, SSK will make you a barrel and adjustible gas block that will fit underneath. The downside is you are stuck with Whisper from .221 brass and more $$ than buying a YHM handguard and TP555 block. If you only shoot subs you could port your barrel on the fat side and fit a Vltor block underneath. If you ever shot supers in it though you will never find your brass. I'm a Utah gunner too. I am just about to go look at the YHM site. My dealer received my 7.62 Phantom and I need to look at the mount for it.

I did get my stamp yesterday for the SBR so that pistol needs a new upper!

I've used one for several years and it's worked well for me.

The valve is held on by a roll pin. Pop the pin and install it on a pistol length gas tube such that it lines up with one of the holes in your upper handguard. Any low profile gas block should work - YHM has a little one for $20. This way you can keep your KISS look and retain the adjustable gas feature without going full custom.

I am a bit unclear how it attaches to the gas tube and controls gas flow. It can't be that hard to figure out but I can't find any good pics online.

Much better pictures but I am not sure about fitting the 'valve' to a pistol tube. It looks like setting up the roll pin and hole for the 'valve' would be critical and difficult for home tools.

Can a carbine tube be shortened to pistol length? (I think I'll ask this question on AR15.com also)

I'll see if I can get some pics for you. Attaching the valve to the tube is pretty straight forward. I'm waiting for my new pistol gas tube right now to do the install myself.

The valve will be oriented on the new tube and drilled through with a 1/16" bit and then pinned. Once in place, the screw is removed and the tube drilled with a 1/8" bit. Put the screw back in and you're good to go.

I had my carbine set up with this adjustable tube in a mid-length and dissy style with a Colt .625 front sight base reamed to fit the carbine barrel profile and tapped for set screws for mounting the handguards.

EDIT: Oh yeah, just went through the excercise of shortening a carbine tube for the pistol location. It's definitely possible, but after giving it the good ol' college try, I ordered a new pistol tube from M1S ($17 shipped). I couldn't get the bends in the tube where I was happy with the alignment with the carrier key...
