I cheaped out, went the easy way. Model 1 Sales 16" A3 upper w/ a 1 in 8 twist mated to a DPMS forged lower. Had it for all of about 3 days now, still need to purchase brass and a set of dies.
edit 06/23/08 reamed the chamber so it would actually chamber a round (Model 1 SUX!
), Leupold 3x9, MagPul MIAD, Hogue carbine length free float tube, low profile gas block, A2 stock, JP adj fire control, and a YHM Phantom supressor. Can't comment on accuracy today because the first trip to the range when Ii was gonna shoot for serious the barrel nut worked loose and my groups looked like buckshot. This Sunday I hope to see its true colors. Running 9.3g H110 under a Hornady 208g A-Max, should chrono at about 1040 or so, I hope. We'll see.
edit 08/23/08: the Hornady/H110 load ran it at about 970fps, initail accuracy was REAL bad, but on the third trip to the range all of the sudden it straightened up and started to run at MOA at 100 yards. Worked up another load of AA1680 and 220gn SMK's that chronos right at 1040fps, right where I want to be. Can report on accuracy of it in a later edit.
Considering (seriously) building a Rem700 in 300 Whisper, 16"-17" Hart barrel in 1:7. Will fit my YHM can on it too.
