First Post/Need Help with First Whisper
Just found this site and really keen on bulding a sub-sonic deer killer for use in politically correct neighborhood. My friend built a full race Rem 700 308 sub-sonic w/ can and has had a lot of trouble with his. First barrel was too slow a twist and other problems. He seems to have it sorted out with a nice Gen. 3 scope that is daytime compatible for short periods of time. It sounds like a pellet gun and shoots great, but the smith on the second go around sold him a very heavy bull barrel and with can, it is just too heavy. He shoots 180 grain pre-loaded 308's round nose , soft points. I think a heavier bullet may be more accurate and a better killer. I'm not clear how my friends 308 is so accurate in that it must have very little powder in the case and that would seem to me to be a problem, but it works.
I want mine for another use. I can legally hunt on my 10 acre lot in the country and have more deer than you can shake a stick at. I also have coyote and two black Labs so I'd like to keep the numbers of both down without driving the neighbors crazy anymore with my .270 just to keep the dogs safe ( a lot of rabies around my area and deer ticks and I have a small child) and the deer eat all our flowers and shrubs.
I want to, no I need to get this right the first time as I'm not very mechanical and can't afford the time, money and aggrevation my friend went thru.
I was thinking of buying one of the new TC Pro Hunters in a muzzleloader and getting an extra sub-sonic barrel for it. For now, I do not want to go to the trouble or expense of a can, but do want the option later. I have heard some great things about someone who cuts chambers for TC rifles with EDM (sp?) that are supposed to be great, but don't know how important that is for my project. I do want the rifle to shoot very small groups, though. This would seem like a more cost effective option that to build ona short action bolt rifle, but I'm a little open to idea if there are sound reasons to shy away from the TC platform. If I went with SSK barrel and chamber for TC would it likey be O.K. with loaded ammo that may come available? I'm guessing they make one for the Encore too.
I do not handload. Does Cor-Bon still load for this round? Are there any other sources? I'm interested in getting into handloading, but would rather not take the plunge unless a source is not likey to open up by Spring 2007
Who makes a barrel with the correct twist and chamber to shoot factory loaded Whisper rounds suitable for a heavy , sub-sonic bullet? What length, twist and contour would be best to hang on Encore frame? I don't have to use a Contender frame, right?
I will most likey get a heavy duplex 2.5 x 8 Leupy and have them put in marks for my various workable ranges. What should those breakdown to? 50 yds, 75 yds, 100 yds, 125 yds, 150 yds....?
Please explain to me how to get best on target effect with killing power. Size of bullet and what insures it will tumble for maxium effect? What bullet is they best for my use? Do I want to consider a .338 caliber? Is ammo available?
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but this should be a good start and thanks in advance.
