I did this one on a .223 CZ527. PacNor 6.5 twist barrel, Leupy MRT and an AAC Cyclone suppressor. Mags must be modified to allow a .30 cal bullet to fit in a .22 cal space (see pic below). Not a big deal. I had my local machinist chuck it up in the end mill and make the necessary cuts. Feeding and extraction/ejection are flawless. Not sure about the
.221 fireball as the Cartridge Overall Length for the fireball round is shorter than the whisper. The whisper uses a C.O.L. similar to the .223 rem.

Pmc
Pmc,

Don't you mean that you removed the ejector?

Does the brass just simply pull out of the chamber and separate from the bolt face, leaving the brass sitting on the follower for you to pluck out now?

300 Whisper bolt action

Hello forum, I am new to the forum and thought I would talk about the bolt action I am currently puting together for my whisper. I purchased a new weatherby vanguard because 1. they are a strong and reliable action and also they are more affordable for me living in Australia. I purchased my chamber reamer from Manson's who by the way make a very good quality tool. The barrel is a 20" MAB moly from a company down under and I made all my own brass from new Rem. fireball 221 using Redding 300/221 deluxe dies. It took me about 3 hours to make 200 rounds with only 3 split cartridges so I was happy. The rifle is not quite finished so I cant tell you how good it shoots yet but I will. For my subsonic rounds I and going to use a new woodleigh bullet which has come out late last year, it is a 240gn protected point weld core so it will be interesting to see how it goes and supersonic will be 125gn nosler ballistic tips. I enjoy your forum, very interesting. Shane

Shane,
Any chance on some feedback on the MAB barrel? I'm reaching the point of sending a Rem700 to MAB to supply/fit/chamber a barrel to 300Whisper. Mostly interested in the 300Whisper as a short-range varminter using the Hornady 110gr V-max ... plus some sub-sonic loads for fun on the farm.
Cheers...
Con

MAB Barrels

Sorry Con, I have not been on for a while, mate I have only seen the barrel once before it went to a smith to do the chamber and I am still waiting so I cant really give you any info at the moment. What I can say is it looked ok when it arrived, when it up and running I will be in touch. Shane

Shane,
That would be much appreciated. I've just received my reloading dies, cases, a few hundred 110gr V-Max and 125gr Sierras, and have some Woodleigh 240grainers as well ... next step is the barrel and getting it chambered! Hoping to use mine as a "big-bore" fox-whistling rifle as well as trying some sub-sonic loadings. Have a mate running a Whisper in a Contender pistol, so I have some loading data using AR2205.
Cheers...

300 whisper

Con, just to let you know I finally got the action back with the barrel chambered and fitted and it looks good. I will be bluing it myself as the guy who done the machining hasnt got his tanks working so I will just cold blue. I am putting a Boyds laminated thumbhole stock on it which I received last week and have started sanding it back for an oil finish. I will be putting a sightron 3-9 x 42 scope with a mil dot recticle. Once it is all together I will start working my loads, I will also be using 2205 to load with as well as it is the fastest Australian powder for the job I believe. I would appreciate any loads you have with the 2205, might save me a bit of time with trial loads. Anyway so far all is well with my little project and the more I progress with it the more I will be able to tell you so it should be fun. Shane

Shane,
I'll be catching up with my mate in the next fortnight at the range and will ask for loads. I know he has used AR2207, AR2205, 2400 and Blue Dot in his Contender pistol. Brass he either uses Fireball (preferred option) or ADI ex-mil .223 brass which is formed in the FL die but then needs its necks turned to work properly in his pistol. Its GREAT FUN to shoot on the range!
I admit I'm having a rethink on my Whisper. Its primary use will be super-sonic 110gr to 130gr projectiles ... plus some medium-weight cast ... so I'm debating whether to use the 1:8" or go something slower. I must have accuracy with the light stuff for the rifle to be deemed successful. I emailed MAB last week but still no reply on their thoughts on the twist. If you have the motivation ... would you mind seating a flat-based projectile backwards into a case and telling me what length throat MAB's reamer has? I might need to adjust that as well for my purposes ...??? What was MAB's turn-around time like?
Cheers...
Con
