Unhappy My 300 has become tempermental..Help needed!

Before I start blind I was wondering if anyone has worked up loads using Winchester 231 in the 300/221 or (whisper).

If so care to share.. I am using 168gr FMJ (both match king and generic), 220 gr (again Match king and hornandy rnd nose) and some 190gr cast with gas checks.

I have a barrel giving me fits. First few rounds thru it were phenomenal then it went in the tolet and all I can get is 2-3" "patterns". Nothing has changed all bullets and powder from the same lot. Same scope and stock... Just driving me nuts. Gun is stocked with a Choate Varminter stock, no can.

I did recently improve the groups by upping the powder to 13 gr of H110 to push the hornady 220 gr rn. but still get two touching and one about an 1.5" away.

All charges weighed, all OAL checked with caliper. Rifle has a 17" barrel on a savage singleshot bolt action. Figured it was time to try another powder bullet combo.

I have tried 2400, 1680 and of course H110. The first group was shot with H-110 and that gave excellent results the first time (3 shots one big hole).

Got a suggestion I am willing to listen. here are some of the things I have tried:
Retorqing the action screws
changed stocks (have not fired yet since the change)
Changed scope
retightened rings and scope mounts (were not loose)
Tried shooting off bags, bipod (first group shot that way), benchrest rest
Changed grip or how I hold rifle
Used lathe to trim and square all brass to within .001 in length
Shortened brass to 1.355 (was about 1.365 yo 1.370)
Clean between groups of 5 shots (after breakin)
Cleaned between every shot
Shot 3 rounds to dirty gun after cleaning
didn't clean gun for 30 shots

I am not a crackshot by any means but can usually work up loads with my rifles that will shoot 1 moa at 100 yards and this one has me baffled. It is a cusotm barrel, 1X8 twist and 17 inches long with target crown.

Ok what do you think, have a favorite powder, bullet, primer load that does well in this sort of set up (bolt rather than a gas gun)? I am open but please include your OAL when loaded so I can try to duplicate. I understand all chambers are a little different and can tailor it if it will not chamber in mine.

What do you think??

Sounds like a bedding issue. With the cast bullets, you may have leaded the barrel.
Try Win 296
