Cartridges are considered "Wildcats" when they are not a normal factory loading.
Some cartridges that were originally "wildcats" have been legitimized and adopted as factory loadings. Two excellent primary examples would be the 22-250 Remington and the .25/06 Remington. Both started their careers years ago and were adopted by Remington.
There is a two volume set called "Wildcat Cartridges" by Wolfe. I consider it a must for an serious rifle cranks professional library. You'll be amazed at the number and oddity of some wildcats.
