lathe options

Hello all, new member here with a question on lathes. I currently use a shop smith lathe that works ok, but would like larger type lathe. my question is, has anyone ever heard of using a bridgeport for turning wood. It would seem to me that it might be idea. The head can be turned sideways and has a spindle speed range of 80 to 4500 rpm. You can purchase them used for about $1500 give or take. Much cheaper then a new heavy duty lathe. Swing is about 18inch. Does anyone have any advice or opinions on this idea?

thanks
