Strange Buck-184 Buckmaster on ebay

There are a few things that strike me as strange with this auction...

First Notice that the markings on the blade are upside down...



Obviously the sheath is not original but I notice that the seller also has one of the small pouches so perhaps the seller needed the original sheath for another knife? The spikes are described as not being original...

I am really curious if this is a factory mutent just the same as if that is a factory knife with the markings engraved upside down it would be the first I have seen like this.

I had e-mailed the seller asking for more information about this knife and I just got the following reply:

Ken,

Hello, Thanks for your interest in the knife. I bought this knife with an original sheath(BUCK PAT PEND-on the sheath) but I needed it for one of my other blades, it also came with the compass & pouch that I am selling in my other auction.

You are right, the marking is upside down, I own 2 other pat pend buckmaster 184s and I just compared them. I never noticed that the marking was inverted, So is this a Factory MUTANT???

The grapling pins (not original) came with a All Black 184 and I just added them to this stainless since I do not need them. I hope this helps and the photos will be on there way to you shortly, Thanks again for looking and your interest.

It would seem to me for it to really be worth anything wouldnt it have to be untouched, By that I meen as no-one has ever touched it with a wet stone nor has anyone ever reshaped the blade, along with all its original accessorys.
I know some times pics can be decieving but looks like a lot of scratches on the blade and the edge looks funny. I am in no way an expert but I have dabbled a little, so it is only an oppinion

Under normal circumstances this knife wouldn't have much going for it. It's missing the original spikes and the lanyard ring, replacement scabbard and the tip has been reshaped. Also as pointed out, the blade is rather scratched up from being sharpened. What it does have going for it is the stamp on the blade ricasso; it's upside down. This is either a mistake that slipped past the inspection process or it is a blade that came out of the factory by alternate means and was assembled by whomever owned it. I would be interested in looking inside the grip. There is a nut inside the grip that holds the grip and crossguard to the threaded blade tang. After this was assembled the bottom portion of the grip was filled with epoxy. If this knife was assembled outside the factory it probably doesn't have the epoxy fill in the grip.

Ken, Hello again. Yes, there is apoxy fill in the bottom of the handle, just like my other Buckmasters I own and others I have bought and sold. Thanks again.

So under that note. Is this thing worth anything with the condition it is in or is just a working mans knife now that it has been messed with. I see it is a little over 100.00. Sounds like it is one of the old winchesters you see all the time that someone has ruined the value on by drilling and tapping for a scope or other dreadfull things I have seen.

I've said this many times, maybe not here before, but what is any of this stuff really worth? Simple answer is that it is worth only as much as someone is willing to pay you when you decide to sell it. You could have a knife that is "worth" $1000, but when you're trying to sell it and the highest offer you get is $500, what is the real value?

This knife is an oddity. To the right person it could be worth a lot. Others might say it's only good to be used as a field knife. It's all a matter of personal preference.

I will agree with that as I have heard and seen it many times. I see guys at the Guns shows that go because they have cash in their pockets and what they want is right in front of them. They pay way to much for what they got. The seller is from ear to ear cause he knows he just made a hefty profit from someone,s uncontrollable impulse purchase.
But they can look at their friends and say LOOK WHAT I JUST BOUGHT

You always need to keep one thing in mind. As all of you know, the value of some things are mostly based upon what someone else is willing to pay. I've been guilty of that my self, paying way to much for something.

Anyone watch the Barrett Jackson Auction? There you go is a good example.

It works the other way as well. How many of you have found something you wanted that was so rediculously cheap that you just knew there had to be something wrong with it? Sometimes it turns out to be that the seller just don't know what the worth is and lets it go for a very low price.
I don't suppose anybody says, "Hey that's way too cheap, let me give you some more money".
