Just as well if it did get the ax. . Do you want camouflage to be effective for woodland, desert or winter snow conditions? Camo paint is is just eye candy to impress your friends if it doesn't fit the environment. It can easily make the rifle more visible than a flat black surface. Netting or foliage has the advantage of camouflaging the rifle and the shooter at the same time eliminating the easy to recognize outline of "man with gun". Natural shadows are the best thing for reducing reflections off of the shooter and rifle.
Some people would think this is good camo, but who wouldn't recognize this as a man with a gun at 400+ yards?
Sensible use of natural light and shadow can provide better camouflage than paint.
