dflicker, if you are shooting an AR and semi, then most of what you are hearing is the action and some chamber pressure. Away from the gun it is quieter than what the shooter is hearing. That is why some of us use switch blocks. If you have a gas block with set screws, you can move the block to cover the gas port, then tighten down, try it single shot and you will hear a big difference. You can also use faster burning powders to make them quieter.
