Rifle barrel threading

Hi I am new to the forum.
I am contemplating purchasing a 9x20 lathe.
I would like to occasionaly thread and chamber a rifle barrel.
Is this possible with a 9x20. I was thinking of running the barrel thrus the spindal hole and using a steady rest with a follow rest when threading.
Is this possible? I am trying to hold costs down. I want to do my own gunsmithing work and do not need a large lathe.
I am new to using a lathe.
Thanks for any info that the forum can provide.

Cool

I threaded my first barrel with a "borrowed" 9" SBL with a 3/4" spindle hole the same as what you are looking at so i would say yes to your question. But my job was a stock barrel and a heavy barrel will not fit thru the spindle so then you need to find a bigger lathe. I would look for a SBL heavy 10 on ebay, craigs list somewhere close to you. Also you need to learn how to run your new lathe whatever you buy. A guy living close to teach you threading would be real handy too. Where do you live???...Bob

Rifle barrel threading

Yes I plan on taking course at the local college.
I live in Casper, WY.
I am thinking of working very occasionaly on pre-contoured barrels and would look at the contour dimensions before ordering a barrel to make sure it can fit in the spindel hole.
Probably would only work on 3 to 5 barrels over the next 10 years.
Thanks for the reply
