I want in on the 300 whipser, I think...

I have been reading through this site and am starting to get discouraged. I really like the idea of the 300 whisper, however, it seems that it is a very finicky cartridge and requires a high level of competency in both reloading and gunsmithing. I was under the assumption that if I had a custom barrel made with a pistol length gas port with the proper diameter and an adjustable gas block that I would be good to go for both subsonic and supersonic rounds. I was hoping that I could just swap out the upper on an unaltered 223 lower.

The more I read it appears that these systems require a lot of fine tuning and load development. I have no reloading experience, was planning on starting with 223, 454 cassull, and the whisper. I also have few tools to do any serious gunsmithing. I have put together two AR’s and they run great, but they required no tweaking. It was merely putting together good quality parts to achieve the uppers I wanted. Is this a project that is way over my head or is all the technical talk just scaring the inexperienced away?

Mine has been very painless.

I built my own using a Lilja 16" fluted barrel with carbine position PRI low profile gas block. Other then the barrel and the PRI block everything else is standard parts, mostly DPMS.

I did some 240gr SMK loads that I liked and then I found the 1/3 priced Hornady 220gr RN bullets and use them. My gun like 1680 for powder. I have no trouble cycling.

I only run subs in mine since if I want a supersonic .30 cal I run my Remington 700P LTR .308 or other .30 cal rifles.

Still waiting on an OD UBR stock. Still need to put a finish on the barrel and get a proper scope for it.

That looks like a very nice setup. If you don't mind I have a couple of questions about your build.

Do you know what the diameter of your gas port is?
Who did your barrel work?

Thank you. I still have some building to do though.

The barrel was made by Lilja in MT and from there it was sent to a gun smith they work with for the chamber/head space, gas port, and threading. The gas block is head in with a set screw vs pined in.

I do not know my port size. The smith was in the south but I can not remember the name at the moment. I did this over a year ago.

My rifle is a bolt action, and the 300/221 is the easiest cartridge I reload. I can understand having to tune loads for an AR-15 system, but it really shouldn't be that big of a deal. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll love the cartridge.
