is there a huge difference between a 1:8 and 1:10 twist. i see here on http://bullberry.com/csale.html that they have in stock a
22", 30-221 Rem, std. scope, chrome-moly, bull, standard 1:10 twist for $309

but from match grade machine it would cost about $450 for the same (i think).

i'm not sure that match grade machine can export.

do i need an export license to export a barrel?

can a us citizen buy a barrel without a special license?

If you want to stabilize 220 -240 grain bullets at subsonic velocities then yes a 1:8 would be desirable. The heavy weight bullets would also be necessary to cycle the action of a gas operated gun. Since the contender is a single shot you can load any bullet weight to subsonic velocities and a 1:10 will stabilize the lighter bullets. If you get a 1:10 twist, how light you have to go to get it to stabilize at subsonic velocity will be dependent on your particular setup.

The last 300/221 barrel I know of from MGM ran around $350 but they may have had a sale going on which they have done before. Bullberry makes excellent barrels also and if that one is in stock thats a plus. I am not a Contender (or anything else) expert but there are two frames, the early Contender and the later G2. Something to check on as you progress with the project. I do not believe there is a problem with barrels but other parts do not interchange between the two. In the US the receiver is the serialized part and requires a license to transfer but all other parts can be sold and shipped freely. Honestly I do not know what the current regulations are on exporting a firearm barrel out of the country.
