Some questions with my build......Please help

I'm new to the .300 whipser but not new to AR's.

I'm building my own and have several questions....

1) Major difference between 300 whisper and 300 fireball and 300/221 (are the last two the same thing?) OK, I'M 'UP TO SPEED' ON THIS.....HAVE 300 FIREBALL DIES ON THE WAY

2) what is the best gas tube length? and why? I'VE DECIDED TO GO WITH CARBINE LENGTH AFTER TALKING TO THE TECH SECTION AT M1S....HE CONVINCED ME IT'S THE WAY TO GO SINCE I WILL BE SHOOTING BOTH SUPER AND SUB SONIC.

3) I plan on getting a M1S upper.....good or bad idea? I REALLY LIKED THE GUY IN THE TECH SECTION.....TOOK THE TIME TO EXPLAIN QUITE A FEW THINGS TO ME....SEEMED VERY NICE AND WILLING TO HELP. THEY'LL GET MORE OF MY BUSINESS.

4) best length? SBR is not a problem....should I go for a shorter barrel then 16".....why? DECIDED TO GO WITH THE 16....LESS HEADACHE WITH THE ATF PLUS SINCE I'LL BE GOING SUPERSONIC IT WILL PROVIDE MORE BURN IN MY 'HUNTING ROUNDS'

5) my intent is to not only use this as a "fun gun" but also as a hunting gun.....so I will be shooting suppressed/unsuppressed....and sonic/sub-sonic.

With all this in mind please help steer me in the right direction....mostly on barrel length and gas tube location.

EDIT: also, I plan on reloading my own and making my brass from 5.56 LC brass. Anyone got a link to a good tutorial on this? Also, do you guys that cut down the .223 rem brass aneal it afterwards? I imagine it gets pretty worked harded.

AFTER TALKING TO THE M1S GUY I FOUND OUT THAT TURNING THE NECK ON THE .223 BRASS WILL BE IMPORTANT SINCE IT WILL BE VERY THICK.


NOW, A NEW QUESTION: I'VE DECIDED TO GO WITH A RIFLE LENGTH STOCK/BUFFER. ANYONE USING THIS? AND HAVE YOU USED STOCK SPRING/BUFFER OR DID YOU LIGHTEN IT UP WITH REDUCED WEIGHT OR SPRING?

JD Jones copyrighted the name whisper so the same round by any other source has a different name hence 30-221, 300-221, 30 or 300 fireball etc. They are essentially the same thing, use the same load data and bullets and have the same ballistics.

I have no idea on the AR stuff so I can't answer those questions.

Barrel length depends on your intended purpose. Longer barrels can give you more velocity if you load for them so if you want high vel hunting ammo to do well thats a consideration. If you only want subsonics than short barrels are fine. You can develop 1050fps from a pretty short barrel reliably but getting 2500fps from a 125gr slug may require a longer tube so the choice is yours.

I use a variety of .223 brass to make my 300-221 brass and I don't normally anneal at all. The working of the brass is not very extensive when loading subsonic and doesn't seem to harden it much. With a tight chamber the brass doesn't get worked much either so it is unlikely to crack soon. I've got cases fired 15 times with no cracks. Annealing will change the grip the neck has on the bullet so that can affect accuracy. Now if you are loading supersonic than you may need to anneal occasionally since the brass will flow or work more.

Hopefully some others will chime in here as we all have different angles and experience....

I think I'm going to stick with the 16" barrel then. Saves me a $200 tax stamp and I'm looking for the ability to load supersonic rounds anyway for hunting.

I have a pretty good supply of .223 brass to make into .300 brass so even if it cracks after 10-15 firings it won't be a big deal. Annealing sounds like alot of work.

I guess the only question then is location of the gas tube. Supersonics seems that they would cycle the action no problem with either length. I guess the only argument for a pistol length gas tube would be reliable cycling of subsonics.


So which would be easier or better for the internals then?.......pistol length and "closing up the gas hole" with an adjustable gas block to prevent "too much" gas with the SUPER-sonics OR a carbine length and "opening up the gas hole" with an adjustable to allow for "too little gas" with the SUB-sonics?

I have a 16" Barrel with Gas port int he Carbine position and the hole is opened up to .125"

I have only been able to get Subsonic rounds to cycle using IMR 4198. Which is very similar to the AA 1680 and Lil Gun. Using 165+ grain projectiles. Cannot get the 150 grain or lower weight bullets to cycle subsonic with the current gas port configuration.

Going to the Pistol Position port will allow for a wider range of powders and bullets weights to be used for sub sonic.

Maybe you can get them to drill both holes and then tap them both for threads and use a small Allen screw to block one off?

Don't screw into deeply though !!

I would say go carbine position for both Sub and Super. Just know that powder and bullet choices will be a bit limited.

how bad would the bolt get beat up with the port in the pistol position and shooting supersonics?

With the right port there will be no issues. .07-.075 with a 16" tube runs great.

If you are planning to shoot both supersonic and subsonic, then I would consider an adjustable gas block and pistol length gas system; supersonic only: carbine length is good.

I personally did not want the hassle of notifying the ATF whenever I cross state lines with my rifle, so I chose 16" and decided not to SBR.

Hotlead.....thanks for the info. That's sounds like another reason NOT to SBR this rifle (as I think this is going to be a hunting rifle that I may use out of state.....didn't even think about the NFA-crossing state lines issue.)


Ok, well it looks like I need to get in touch with M1S and have them drill the gas port at the pistol position.
