Lawfficer,

You mention in the 300-221 Weapons section that Thompson Center makes 300-221 barrels, and I just wanted to make a correction.

T/C does indeed chamber it's custom shop barrels in the genuine .300 Whisper chamber, under license from J.D. Jones/ SSK. (Not the 300/221).

I purchased brass and RCBS (.300 Whisper) dies directly from SSK when I first got my T/C barrel. The brass was Lake City 5.56mm formed into the Whisper cartridge, so that is all I use for brass; it works well enough that I have never had to form brass from the .221 Fireball.

eta: nice collection of information!

Yes TC's custom shop does make 300 whisper barrels but they are only 1:10 twist not 1:8 like most like for shooting heavy long bullets.
I found this out when I called TC to have a barrel made with 1:8 and ended
up having SSK make it for me.
Damn barrel cost me more $ having SSK make it, but it does shoot nice :)

I guess one comment I'd like to add is that the round was actually developed from the .223 back in the 60's as a wildcat deer and small game round. It seems that whenever a new cartridge comes out someone has to fiddle with it and the .223 had a lot of mods done up and down in size. I think the only real claim jones has is putting the heavy subsonic bullet in the round though he seems to get credit for inventing the whole idea of subsonics which is not the case at all. Not trying to take anything away from his contribution but don't forget all the previous steps he built on top of.

It is good to see some dedicated pages with a bit more than just the small blurb normally given to the round.

Thanks so much for getting the website going. One thing I would add is if you have a Stoney Point/Hornady AOL gauge then you can send in a few fired cases and they can modify a case to fit the OAL gauge. I think the cost is around $10 and it takes a couple of weeks.

I think Hornady bought Stoney Point.

Roger that...I was only referring to the chambering. Not only are they 1:10 twist it is LH instead of RH twist.

I have the T/C bbl, but in retrospect, I should have spent the extra $$ for the SSK for the flexibility in bullet weight.

As for HAWK BULLETS: They make some pretty darn good bullets for medium velocity ( 30 and 7mm ), but they are working on some heavy bullets that will expand at the Whisper speed. Hopefully have it out by summer.....Along with a couple of other companies> Keep fingers crossed!!!!!
