So I wanna do another 300 whisper, only different.

I've got a .300-221 fireball contender that is intended to only be shot supersonic, 12" twist barrel I believe. I've used it for medium sized game with 130 grain bullets SSP Hornady bullets without issue. It just works, very little drama involved, low recoil, low noise, etc.

now then, I want to build (have built) a suppressed 300 whisper rifle. What I need from you folks is some advice on the suppressors, and any other pertinent information that you might want to share or suggestions on project build.

Not yet sure of the platform, remington 700, CZ 527, Savage, or TC contender or encore. I am leaning more towards the bolt action so that I can have my accuracy gunsmith build it.

Suppressors, what kind and how much do these cost.

I've never done the paperwork for the tax stamp, so I'll need to do that in MD.

I've got Redding dies, have formed brass and reloaded for the cartridge, but only with 118 grain benchrest bullets and 130 grain hunting bullets.

I've done some research, read the posts here and am hoping to get the right suppressor for the job. Not sure how much this project will cost, I'll probably need to order a reamer for it as well as a barrel.

built mine on a Savage action. very accurate. cans run 300 to 1500, depends on a lot of factors. I went with AAC Cylone for mine. dealer starts paperwork, you have a cleo sign off or a trust, send it in and wait about 2-3months.

Can you have a suppressor in MD? I really don't know much about your states gun laws but I am under the impression they are fairly restrictive. I'd check that out first.

I went with the TC with a SSK 1:8 twist for heavy bullets and
AAC 762sd for the can.
I'am having a 12oz can made by Degroat http://armamentsales.com/ just for the whisper.

I have a swr omega 30 on mine. But rember you can also use a 9mm can and have a double use "as well as the 30 such as 308 or 300 mag". I originally planned to use my swr trident 9 on mine but it has found itself on my g17 and 4" 9mm upper instead :)

I'm playing with the idea of having a mini 14 reworked into a 300 whisper. What kind of input can you guys give as far as accuracy improvements, suppressors, and smiths to do the work.

I'm assuming that if you have a TC in 300 Whisper w/10" (?) barrel & a stock attached to it then it is registered as an SBR???

Do you have to put a new Serial # on the receiver?

What happens if you want to take the TC as a pistol out of state?
Do you still have to get "transit papers" if you leave the stock @ home?

only if you want it to be legal.

ATF will tell you to use the serial number already on the receiver. However, there is basis in law requiring you to reuse this number, and you can engrave a new number if you desire.

It is an SBR and you will need an approved 5320.20 to take it across state lines.

If it has the buttstock removed, it no longer meets the definition of an SBR. Some people will tell you that it is still an SBR, since it is recorded in the NFRTR as such. Once again, there is no basis in law supporting this though, since it does not meet the definition of an SBR as laid out in The Law. Some will say it's a gray area. I look at it from a practical standpoint, though.

It does not meet the definition of an SBR if the stock is removed, or a long barrel is installed and it is very unlikely that you will catch grief anywhere over your single-shot not-scary-looking rifle/pistol. However (here's the practical view), if you were somehow picked up with a "registered" SBR in non SBR-format having crossed state lines without a permission slip, you will likely win in court, but it would be an expensive (lawyer fees) win. It's much easier to just file the paperwork.

Or - worst case, ATF admits that they can't require you to get a state-hopping permission slip while the gun is in non-SBR format, but they rule that, since it was un-SBRed, it would require another $200 tax to re-SBR, you (and the rest of us) would be hosed by the precedent set. But I doubt it would ever come to that.

File your paperwork and go on your merry way.

(did any of that make any sense at all?)
