Ready to build my upper. HELP
 

I'm ready to build my 300 whatever upper. I've been reading and looking for parts and it's just about to drive me crazy. So many companies. :eek: Please help me build an affordable, accurate upper. I want a midweight 16" MOA or better barrel. I want a simple freefloat tube, and a flat top upper receiver. I may SBR this later on and I plan on getting a can. It will mostly be used for subsonic deer hunting. I'll be shooting 220-250gr SMKs. I already have the bolt and carrier from my Oly Arms K16.

I don't have any AR specific tools. Please help me put together a list of all the parts I should purchase and where to purchase them. OR, if you know of a quality, accurate preassembled upper for less money please let me know.

If you might be doing the SBR route down the road go with a pistol length gas system.

I like PRI carbon fiber tubes but the are not cheap. Very high quality though.

For a barrel, get in touch with Spook. He can hook you up and the gunsmithing will be top notch.

I too will vouch for Spook. I love my barrel and it is the same blank that Noveske uses for much less $$$. Peter also helped me with questions on gas blocks, handguards and more. Buy with confidence from Spook and Hoser's brass is awesome too!

I was going to assemble it myself but I hate to buy the tools just to use them once.

Spook does some of the best work around on the 300wtf ever, i have had 6 rifles and uppers built by him, all flawless. He is a great guy to deal with and is reasonable priced also.

Has he built you a similar upper to what I want to build? What kind of groups can you get?

he made me 8.5" and 10" barrels and i was getting around .8 moa at 100 yds with 208 amax subs and I played with it at 500yds with supersonics and was getting around 3 moa if i rember correctly but that was with the 10" since i never shot the 8.5.

The bolt gun e built me a few months ago is getting a little better with a 17" 1-10 twist tube, But I havent played with it much since the modified factory stock is flimsy as hell

If you decide to assemble your upper yourself, don't panic! I put mine to gether with almost no tools, and the ones I used were not specifically "AR" tools. If I can do it, anyone can!

I used a DPMS "Flat top, slick-side, high rise" upper (no tools needed, no assembly required). I used a Model 1 Sales "300 Fireball" barrel, seems to be very accurate and shoots both subsonic and supersonic well. I used a ultra-low profile gas block.

I simply used a block of wood and a c-clamp to clamp the upper reciever to my work bench. I wrapped the reciever in a cloth to prevent marking it up. Slide the barrel into the reciever and tighten the free-float tube until it was tight, then snugged it down until one of the holes lined up for the gas tube. I wrapped an old welding glove around the float tube, then used a large pair of Channel Lock pliers to snug it down good and tight. The reason I did this is because those cute plastic holding blocks that you use to clamp standard flat-tops and A2 type uppers will not fit the DPMS highrise upper anyway!

After tweaking the gas tube a little, I slid the gas tube and gas block into place. Reach a finger into the reciever and stop up the barrel while blowing air down the barrel with compressed air (or use your mouth, don't laugh!:grin:) Turn the gas block back and forth until the air blows freely through the gas tube. Lock it down, most gas blocks have set screws.

Install the charge handle and bolt assembly and your done! It was a simple build because by using the slick side upper I didn't need to assemble a forward assist or dust door. The free float tube didn't require special tools like the standard mil-spec forearm needs to tighten the delta nut assembly. Very simple and looks great!

Even when I assembled my butt stock onto my lower reciever, I used a brass punch and a mallet to tighten the castle nut! No special tools necessary!

Those, along with some punches, are all you need to assemble any AR15 upper or lower. If you are just doing an upper, you can buy it with the dust cover and forward assist already installed and do not even need the punches. For $70, you can put together all the AR15's you want, along with your friends. It will also come in handy if you decide to change things up down the road. I know I'm always switching out barrels/FF tubes, etc. One more thing, I have a strap wrench that I got from Lowes, which really makes tightening FF tubes easier:

It's not entirely necessary, but it also has other uses around the house, so not a bad investment.

What kind of damage will a 208gr A Max do on game/deer at subsonic velocities?

I just need a good brand of upper and a simple/cheap yet strong free float tube.............What's the opinion of the Modle 1 FF tube?

Dont know about subsonic loads on deer kills. I havn't done that yet, but there's no reason why not if you keep the shots close, say under 100 yards. There's plenty of folks here that can tell you about that since I don't know.

You can always load supersonic for hunting purposes. That I know about! I bagged a big 8-point with my 300 "Fireball" at 75 yards using 125 grain Sierra's running about 2300 fps. It was like a bolt of lightning hit that big old buck!

Model 1 is fine from a durability standpoint - DPMS, Yankee Hill are also good budget choices. Make sure to get a low profile gas block since it will be in the pistol position (if you want the handguard to be longer than 4").

Just a suggestion, but if you ever have to clean or adjust your gas system (port size, misalignment etc.) or handguard, the AR tools will save you at least a $70 trip to the gunsmith. Also if you want to put on different accessories like stocks and muzzle devices, you are best served owning one of the AR multi-tools.

It's out of a 308, but 1050 is 1050.

Shot a few with subs, all head shots so that won't help. I use a 200gr speer hot cor on hogs and deer with good success at 1040 fps. However I only got a doe this year with a gun unless you consider a toyota tacoma a gun "it was traveling at subsonic velocities too":)

The only thing Hoser left out which you should know is to get your brass from him. I know he refrained because he is modest, but I will add that. Let Spook build it, and it will run. Have Hoser help you feed it, and all will be well.

Nah I have a bull guard on the front and it was actually in my driveway. I was going about 20 mph so it was really my fault "our deer in Ms. are small anyway 80lb average on does" I turned in of the main road and its heavily wooded and bam right around midnight on the way home! Dented my bull guard and it pushed back into my bumper popping the sides out of the rails.

no injuries except for the doe, just glad it was friday so i had time to clean it before bed ;)

He will be installing a threaded 16" SS PacNor barrel .8" OD with a pistol length gas tube. It will be chambered in 300 Blackout.

I'm getting my brass ready for Hoser as we speak. Bought 500 rounds of 180gr bullets for practice. Got 220gr SMK's for Hunting. I just need to get my suppressor paperwork started. WoooHoooo!!!! I'm finally doing this :t

Got my brass back from Hoser. Looks great. Now if my QD suppressor mount would get in stock, Spook could finish up this little project.
