50 Alaskan Subsonic build help needed
Talked to JD Jones, and for case prices, he says the 50 Alaskan is hard to beat if you can live without a bolt action. I have a Ruger No. 1 in 458 Lott that I've been thinking about rebarreling, so the host is already here.
Anyone shoot one of these? Will the factory Hornady 50 Alaskan reloading dies work? Anyone make a Form 1 suppressor for a 500 or 510 whisper that will share design ideas? Load data? Help appreciated. |

50 Ak as the brass is easy to get and cheaper, the 510 whisper is 338 lapua that needs lathe work. I have both and like both but I also have a lathe that keeps the cost down when 510 brass is needed. If you only plan to shoot subsonic loads then you could get away with a form 1 aluminum can, but if you plan to shoot full power loads too then I would advise a steel can. The Horny dies are what you need for the 50 Alaskan |
50 Alaskan
Thanks Redtazdog,
Would you be willing to share some load data? What are the dimension's of your SSK suppressor? Input greatly appreciated. |
750 AMAX
34.0 of RE7 1050 out of a 16" |
JDJ also has one called the 50-70-750. The old 50-70 shooting BMG bullets, whisper with a rim.

Thank you for the other suggestion. I have pretty well settled on the 50 Alaskan in a Ruger No. 1. Selling off a few toys to finance the rodeo. Will post results of my project when it comes to be.

The 50 Alaskan has my attention now. Although I still need to get my 300WTF to shoot properly yet.
What twist barrel would be required to stabilise a 750gn Amax? Subsonic would be my ideal for this on a No. 1. But how fast could you get a 750 Amax to go? Got me thinking for my next toy. |
1/16" works fine for mine. the 34.0 grains of RE7 pushes it at 1040-1060

I'm not doubting you, but I didn't think the bullet would stabilize with that slow of a twist. |
I'm shooting a 750 AMAX to 800 Barnes solid. Those twist rates are for 30 cal, I don't think they make that fast a twist for 50.
