View Full Version : What is the perfect bolt action to start with for conversion to 300 Whisper

I prefer something petite such as a Swedish Mauser model 38. Are there any small slim controlled feed actions out there that might not require too much work to convert to the 300 with scope?

As the great state of Michigan is my place of residence, suppressors are out of the question. I know, I asked my hunting buddies the County Prosecutor, State Police Investigator and Sheriff. They told me if I can figure how to get a permit for a can or a fully shrouded rifle barrel out of Lansing I should tell them!

With the above as background, do you think very long barrels, in the range of 30 - 32 inches, might quiet down a subsonic 300 with 250 grain projectiles? I cannot believe how quiet my CZ 452 with its 24" bbl. shooting PMC Moderators is (it is quieter than a fully shrouded FX Cyclone airgun I own) and I was wondering if this might translate to centerfire as well.

Mike welcome, I would look at any .223 action size control feed bolt guns.
but as you like CZ's why not a CZ 527 American. :)

The CZ 527 American has all the features of the CZ 527 Lux rifle in an American style package, and now for 2004 also wide selection of wooden and laminated stocks. Made just for the American shooter, the American features a detachable 5 round magazine, a classic American pattern Turkish stock, 18 LPI checkering, hammer forged barrel, single set trigger, and recessed target crown.

CZ 527 features:
· True micro length action
· Controlled round feed
· Hammer forged barrel
· Single set trigger

The CZ 527 American is supplied with scope rings. 21.9 inch barrel but as you want 300 whisper you'll have to put new 1:8 twist barrel on it anyway so it doesn't matter.

Other options...
Ruger’s Model 77 Mark II action, which features a one-piece bolt with a two lug lockup, a large claw extractor, controlled round feeding from the magazine, and a fixed-blade ejector. The safety is a three-position wing type that is easy to use, and clears any low-mounted scope sight.

Model 70 Brown Laminated, Coyote, Stainless (223 Rem.)
If you're looking for a proven specialty varmint rifle design that can double as an effective big game rifle, look no further than the Coyote. Available in a Stainless model or the new Blued version, the Coyote is designed for the hunter who needs both an easy-to-carry rifle and one capable of long-range accuracy. To that end, the Coyote pairs an accurate, 24" medium-heavy barrel with a rugged laminated stock with a reverse taper fore-end. The unique stock design is perfect for using a bipod, shooting sticks or sandbags. The impressive Controlled Round Push Feed bolt — which combines the best aspects of a push feed and Controlled Round Feed bolt — is standard. The Coyote is a great all-in-one rifle, built for any situation. Standard short-action, WSM and WSSM calibers are available, including the new 325 WSM. Additionally, the 223 Rem. is now chambered in the super-short action.

And I thought I saw Savage now offering a controled feed option but their site is a little hard to navagate.

Length of barrel on rounds of small powder charges can make a difference in sound but from what JD Jones says the 300 whisper only burns powder for under 15 inches of barrel then it's coasting down the tube.

Artful;

So you quote JD as saying:

"Length of barrel on rounds of small powder charges can make a difference in sound but from what JD Jones says the 300 whisper only burns powder for under 15 inches of barrel then it's coasting down the tube."

My observation is that my PMC Moderators are almost as loud as "high velocity" .22's when fired from my son's Ruger MK II pistol but when fired through my 24" bbl. rifle they are really quiet. Of course the reason is that in the short pistol bbl. they both shoot high pressure gas (which itself is moving at supersonic speeds, never mind the bullet) out the muzzle and make that CRACK! that we all know and love.

To restate the question - if the barrel length is beyond what is required for full and complete acceleration of the projectile (within reason here, I am not asking anyone to speculate about 8 foot tubes) will any meaningful reduction in muzzle report be obtained? The closer the pressure coming out of the end of the barrel is to atmospheric pressure the less of a shock/sound wave will be generated (think about popping a balloon with a pin). So what is the optimum "sweet spot" for barrel length considering the compromises of gun handling (back to a mental image of the 8 foot barrel) and sound moderation?

JD - care to sound off?

Kind regards,

Mike

Well I'm not JD, and I haven't tried this but if it was me I'd order the blank as long as economically feasable and listen to the sound and feel the balance and decide if I could live with a little more noise if I didn't like the handling qualities of the gun - and shorten until I reached a compromise - remember if you use a faster burning powder you will have a reduced pressure at the muzzle as more of the powder will have been consumed by the time it reach's the muzzle then a slower burning powder.

I built one for my father last year on a charles daily mini mauser action.

I hope the controlled feed isn't really all that needed as I am having mine built on a Remington 700 Pust Feed action... I am building a Remington 700 LTR Clone with a 20-inch barrel with a Gem-Tech TPR-S Bilock...

I think I need to start saving for a supressor ;)

Just had this one done on a CZ527 Kevlar Varmint. I sent the barreled action off to PacNor for a rebarrel in .300 Whisper. I went with their 1:6.5 twist SS Supermatch barrel. To say I'm pleased would be an understatement. Haven't really put much time in on load development either, but the 220gr SMK on top of 10.6 grains of Reloader7 is giving me 1020fps and sub MOA groups. Hard to argue with that. I'm gonna play with some H4227 next week. I had SSK build my first Whisper (a TC Contender) and it was a good shooter, but I'm happier with this one from PacNor. The second picture is of the modification that must be done to the mag to allow those fat .30 cal bullets to fit in a .22 cal space (the bullets pictured are 220 gr Sierra Pro-Hunters). I had my local machinist modify the mags. Very simple to do. He just chucked it up in the end-mill and milled out the dimple. I had him only machine down so far so that the relief-cut doesn't show below the line of the weapon when the mag is in place. That dropped the mag capacity to four instead of five. No big deal.
