A nice looking rifle, I would like some info on suppresor.

it's an M baffle design. Not my design, but one I copied from the Silencer Talk forum. All the credit for this design goes to Sub-Sonic on the silencertalk forums, it was his design and from videos he has posted it works extremely well

the entire cost of the silencer was about $250 ($200 for the Tax stamp and about $50 for materials)

$10 for the Stainless Tube http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=481&step=4&showunits=inches&id=19&top_cat=0
$16 for the freeze plugs http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/1_1_2_Cup_Expansion_Plugs_p/a3965.htm
the other $24 was spent on shipping for the above items and on a few miscellaneous parts like the pipe fitting that was welded to the can and blind pinned to the barrel

I didn't have access to a CNC Lathe or CNC Mill so I had to use a simple to make design.

Here is a link to the design I copied. You will need to join the forum to view the entire post http://www.silencertalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19231

I used 1.625"x12" 304L stainless for the tube. The ID is 1.495". and I made the baffles out of 1.5" freeze plugs that were subsequently bent into M baffles.

Below are a few pictures (again not mine, but from the original post of the silencersmith form) showing the baffles and how to make them

Place a 3/8" ball bearing in the enter of the freeze plug and place the freeze plug on an appropriately sized socket

http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww41/tdale/Baffle1.jpg

Tape it to the freeze Plug and place it into a vice

http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww41/tdale/Baffle2.jpg

Clamp down on the vice

http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww41/tdale/Baffle3.jpg

Dill your bore hole and grind out some of the freeze plug skirt to reduce weight

http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww41/tdale/baffle.jpg

I overview of the design....except that mine is permanently attached with welded in place blind pins

Did you do the machinening yourself? I have some ideas, but have to wait to send a Form 1 because I am now out of a job. I did buy a 16x40 Lathe and a small Mill & Drill that I had in the Machine Shop before the Company got stripped out. I still have plans, just have to want on the money and it will be convenient haveing the tooling at home.

I feel your pain, I lost my job 2 months ago

Anyway i did all the work myself.

I have a small 7x14 lathe that made centering the holes in the baffles easy

but there isn't much machining needed with the design I built

just drill holes in the baffles after you bend them then heat treat them and pound them into your tube with a big hammer

the hardest part was engraving the tube to ATF specs. once I got my home-built electroetcher working it wasn't hard

tdale4,

How and why did you heat treat the zinc freeze plugs?

Thanks.

tdale4,

How and why did you heat treat the zinc freeze plugs?

Thanks.

The freeze plugs are made from a zinc plated soft steel

I heated them up to red hot with a propane torch and quenched them in salt water. I did this twice. then I heated them up to red hot and quenched them in used motor oil

I did this because it is suppose to harden the steel and provide a longer life by reducing the erosion that occurs in a silencer

doing some research myself. You used stainless tube. It weighs roughly 1lb/linear foot. I also see they sell aluminum tube. The weight is 1/3 for roughly same wall thickness and diameter. 2/3 for double the wall thickness.

http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=4363&step=4&showunits=inches&id=71&top_cat=60

did you do any research on whether the aluminum tube in these thickness was up to the task. There is a substantial weight savings for the thin was. still some for the thicker stuff. Just curious.

Love the way that rifle looks!!! I'm planning on doing something similar when my docs (Form 1 sent Feb. 19) and parts finally get hear.

Can you show us a pic of the hand guard where you access the gas block? I have been interested in the YHM had guard and wondered how well it worked out with the tp555 adjustable block.

Thank you
