If this has been previously address, pardon my redundenacy.
I am soon to receive a newly built 300 whisper on a Rem. action with a Gemtech can.
The barrel is a Lilja with a 1:8 twist.
Do I have any concerns with the feared "baffle strike" if I use any particular bullet?
I plan to shoot mostly 220 and 240 gr Sierra.
The reason for my question is that there is a specific warning with my 22 LR can as to using Aguila Super Sniper ammo- It is 69 gr 22 ammo- realllllly long lead bullet and the paperwork with the suppressor says DO NOT USE .
Anyone out there had a baffle strike?
What's the skinny?
Thanks
The problem with the super sniper bullet was standard 22lr barrels did not have a fast enough twist to stabilize that long of a bullet so they started making the custom twist barrels for it. The same holds true for any barrel/bullet combo. Use to long of a bullet with to slow a twist barrel and the bullet may not fly straight however the 220s and 240s seem to be ok. My informal figuring for my 1:8 tells me to stay under 1.625" bullet length to keep the bullet stabilized at subsonic velocities but there are variables so...

I would shoot velum drafting paper or just good paper first without the can to make damn sure you have nice round holes. My 1:8 Shilen shot 220 MK's at 1050 without the can straight, but my Thundertrap seemed to wobble them and it showed on my groups. The concentricity from the I.D. to the O.D. of my suppressor wasn't great either as I could visually see the wobble when spun in a lathe. My 125 BT's at 2400 with the can were benchrest quality though. I'm curious how your Gemtech does. Dater is a stud and I love all my Gemtech cans. Sierra just came out with 210's, so you can always go lighter until they stabilize.

Thanks for the replies!
Will definitely measure everything to be under 1.625 and the heavy paper trick is simple and to the point-will try that prior to screwing on the Gemtech.
Once the rifle is delivered I will get back to the forum with pictures and results.
Thanks again.
jarhead for my own curiosity are the end caps welded on a thundertrap? That is usually where you see differences in the id and od axis because of heat warpage but they usually are true to the bore so no problem.
