How to un-screw the tang from the blade?

Hello,
I was reading this post http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/sh...=8534#post8534 about a Taiwan M9, and I saw a picture of a disassembled M9.
I would like to know which tools/procedure would you suggest me to follow to un-screw the tang rod from the blade.
I would like to replace the guard from one of my M9s (and, to do so, I'll need to un-screw the tang), but Im worried about scratching or ruin the blade in the process.

Put a piece of thin wood on each side of the blade and clamp it in a vise, then use a wrench to remove the tang rod.
