Anyone used a Remington 799 yet for a 30-221

I just got one of these little jewels and they are pretty much little mauser actions though the extractor is more like the SAKO according to the info on remingtons website. Doesn't seem to be a big deal though, the ejector is in the back of the receiver like a proper mauser so no issues with the button in the 700 if that is a problem. I'm waiting for reamer on this project which hopefully won't be long. I'll keep updates going. Rifle is a remington 799 in .223 originally. I already pulled the barrel and I've got a Pac Nor 1:7.5" 3 groove blank ready to go when the reamer arrives. I'm looking at a 16" barrel length just to avoid registration issues. I'm thinking I'll build the suppressor integral with the barrel and maybe do a tensioned barrel while I'm at it.
all for now

The reamer showed today and I got the barrel fitted, chambered and installed. We fired just a few rounds to test the chamber and it works great but we had no chrono available . I was concerned because a friends AR had some issues with the necks on military brass being too tight. The Manson reamer seems to be on the bigger side so its not a problem. I really don't want to neck turn 1000 cases or be stuck using commercial brass. . .

I don't have the supressor done yet but I hope to have it ready to test this weekend. I have a barrel length of 16.5" with the barrel tensioned and the suppressor will be about 6 or 8" to start with. I'll fiddle once I get it built. (Its nice to be a C2 and not pay the making tax on each item....)

We loaded 150gr .308 tracers because I had them handy and used 9.0gr of H110 to send them. To my surprise they all lit. I couldn't detect any sonic crack but we really need to get a chrono to do loads that are proper. We fired a few rounds of the Corbon 220gr stuff too and it didn't crack either. I can't wait to get a scope mounted so we can do some hole punching that makes sense....

The guys who looked at the rifle were pretty impressed with the action and it was pretty easy to work on. I think this will be a good one if the groups are decent.
I'll update as I get more info....

Here are a few pictures of the rifle and can. Not really good quality ones yet but I'll get some when I have the bluing done. We shot the rifle yesterday with the suppressor and it works quite well. Now I'm just waiting for scope mounts so I can do some paper punching and see how well it really shoots. The barrel shroud is used for tensioning the barrel and also acts as additional space for gas expansion. It looks a bit funky but appears to work well. The suppressor vents back into the shroud and the larger expansion chamber allows the suppressor to be shorter. Overall length with the can is 22" and barrel length is 16.5" .

here are some pics of the rifle blued and finished. Tomorrow we shoot some groups with the newly installed scope guiding the way.

muzzle end of barrel looks a bit off due to the gobs of nickel anti-sieze I put on. I hate it when the can gets stuck with rust, powder fouling or galling.
Can vents back into the barrel shroud for a larger expansion chamber. I'll try blocking the vents at some point to see if it helps or not.
All for now
