Question 25-308 (25 souper) build

I'm thinking of using a DPMS LR 308 lower and having a upper built for this round, my other thought is to use a remington 700. I like the ideal of the AR 10 platform but, I still like the traditional rifle looks of the 700. I have a custom 300 win. mag. built on the 700 action and love it (3/4" groups at 200 yrds). I also have a dpms ar15 that is a real tack driver. Does anybody has any thoughts on this?

Question

Has anybody got any ideals for a better platform for this build? What would be a good barrel to use? How about a good gunsmith that would be interested in this. Is there any problems with this feeding in anything?

I don't have any feedback myself except to say if I were doing the build I would be doing in in a Rem 700 action but that is only because here in PA I can not hunt with a semiauto and a cartridge like this just seems to be an ideal long range varmint/deer round to me.

The performance of the round should split the 257 Roberts and 25/06 with a true short action. So, I would not build something with a barrel under 22-inches but I would have a tough time deciding if I really needed 24-inches for that round

I wis I had more time to get out and go hunting as the past many years I don't get to go hunting or shooting anymore.

Thanks for the input, with the cost of everything I think I will go with the rem. I have an old 700 in 308 that really has seen better days. I was thinking of a 20" barrel though, how much vel. do you think I will lose?

25-30fps/inch with that case/bore ratio, You can combat some of that loss by using a powder on the fast end of the powder range. H4895, 10x range as always start low and work up.

Building 5 Souper?

I would use a kreiger Barrell, nothing shorter than 22"...preferably 23 at the least for me ,..I would choose a 1 in 9" twist, and run it with reloader 17, or VihtavouriN160,..H4350 AS A 3RD CHOICE,..I have built 2 25 Soupers now, and they have a 1 in 10" twist, but I believe through a friend doing one on a Barnard actioned rifle, that better accuracy, for the 100 grainers through to his favoured 117 grainers ( projectiles) would be achieved with a tighter twist, if not a kreiger Barrell, a schelin,..I love the calibre, and its as good as a 25-06 with less powder,...

P.s 25 Super...

Personally no matter what barrell length, I wouldnt go Faster than Hogdens varget,..I believe that H 4895 would be far too fast, but your choice as to what you want to do there, Reloader 17, gives hiher velocity, with lower pressure, and is on par to the recommended powder rate for the Souper,..

25 Souper

I build 5+ of these every year. Most on Remington SA 700s , 7s and 600s. I did one on a M1A years ago in Hawaii and it won most of the leg matches the owner entered. I also do quite a few of the "improved" [?] versions too but like the standard best [personally] Very accurate cartridge and I kill a lot of game with it. Low recoil and flexible loading. I would recommend it highly. My own Souper has a 22.5 in # 2 McGowan barrel and is a shooter with the Sierra Game King 100gr bullets.
Aloha, Mark

I have something very similar, in that I did a "stub" Encore in .25 X .307 AI. I used a Pac Nor Polygonal 26" barrel, and have a wonderfully accurate shooter that lets me see the impact. I like the rim for the break action.

Left .307 parent case, center fireformed .25 X .307, .243 for reference.

120 gr. Sierra, I just showed the front half, because the back half was a mess.
