I've got the same bug. I put a USO 3-22x58 on my 16" 308....I don't shoot deer, I shoot fleas off of deer.

Ok, what if you take the Laupa 200 Subsonic (or barnes or whatever) and make a cut around the middle so that when it hits it breaks in two when it starts to tumble?

when I started this thread, my idea was a different metal combination that was heavier than lead to achieve the highest energy possible in case you screwed up the shot and it went through a shoulder. The more energy, the greater liklihood of a pass through and recovery of the game. However, I was researching energy of arrows, and they were only around 150 ft/lbs. SO I asked myself, what's the difference? If full velocity ammo can enter a thin skinned deer and not exit after hitting/glancing off bone, what would make the difference? Cutting ability v/s blunt force is the only think I came up with.

We/I need to make up some ballistic gell and and test some of these ideas. If the bullet isn;t bonded, it should break/tear along fracture lines.

ya the biggest problem is the jackets for sure. they are really tough and overly thick for subsonic.
I shoot these @ 100 yrd. and they just poked strait thru a 4" thick by 12 wide wood beam. that I set against one of the 80 lb. metal plates that I shoot at for long range.
Totally NO expansion on impact what so ever. The 220 grain soft points just cruzed right threw and atomized the lead after the sudden stop on the steel plate. To just leave the jackets splayed-out and just laying there on the ground.
.
I also did up some HP's on the 20's and they left some lead behind but not much. I made up a few more a little bigger and will give them a try in a few days.

For some Gauranteed expansion and some Awsome FRAG, I think What I really need to do is just put a big honkin hole on top and shove a shotgun Primmer right on top for some FUN. ...
This Pic, is a good example of just how tough the jackets are

Nope, not going there again - I was young and dumb when I put primer's into hollow point of 45ACP loads but gave it up when one went off prematurely - don't suggest you do it in semi-auto firearems.

Ya I have to admit it is a little loose on the conservative side of safety. And not a good idea in a semi-auto that is slamming a Round in the Chamber ....
Maybe I should have added : ... Don't try at Home" & "Do At Your Own Risk". after than sentence but I was kind of joking.
Even though I have actually done it before.Just like you in .45 HP's ... . but I did not have one Go OFF. LOL Hahahaha

Anyway those Jackets are Tough and thick. I could not believe when they just Hummed right through that piece of 4" thick header and not even affect the jackets @ 100 yrd. The holes were all clean and small. front and back of the wood block.
Those jackets Petals are long hard jaged and stiff like knife blades to after they slamed the 80 lb. skid-loader track pad.
