300 Whisper Build Question?

Hello this is my first post here. I know this has been covered before and I have looked at the previos posts but here is the question. I about to build a 300 Whisper upper for my AR-15 and I am looking for a 16 inch barrel. I will be using the upper to shoot subsonics along with a suppressor. I want a barrel that will be capable of at least 1 moa with subsonics. I have looked at the fatory offerings as well as AR15barrels.com, Noveske, and Mike Rock. I would like to know if anyone has any experience with these barrels in 300 Whisper using heavy 200gr to 250gr bullets. If so please let me know what twist and what type of gas port you are using for the barrel. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Holyfield,

I have two Olympic Arms barrels, one Noveske barrel, and one AR15-barrel.com barrel (on loan). All of them shoot very well and are able to 1-inch or better groups at 100 yrds.

If you are mainly going to shoot sub-sonic loads you will need a 1:8 twist barrel with the gas port in the pistol position. You will want a gas port of about 0.070 in.

As far as getting a barrel, AR15-barrels, Noveske, and Mike Rock are all good sources. I have heard that Randall at AR15-barrels is a bit back logged but... he does make a great barrel as does Noveske. I have only heard good things about Mike Rock barrels as well.

The custom barrel barrel will take about 3 to 6 months. So, if you are like me and want to get started right away, order a barrel and or all the upper parts (if you need them) from Del-ton. They have 300-221 fireball barrels in stock. That is were I got one of my Oly. barrels. Tony at Del-Ton is a very helpful person and stands behind his products.

Then order your "good" barrel from one of the sources you listed above.

I have both good and bad things about Model-one so caveat emptor.

We have Noveske Barrels in 10.5 and 16" with pinned gas block and custom gas tubes ready to go. We can also build custom uppers for you.

Below is a pick of a custom 10.5 I am in the process of building.

Lots of good info. Thanks for the responses guys. I think I will do as you suggested and start with an upper that is readily avaliable and then upgrade a little later. I can then become a little more familiar with the cartridge as well. Thanks for the help

Not sure it matters when it comes to the AR variants but for a bolt gun 300 Whisper build make mine a Rock....

300-221 Barrels

I got my Broughton 1 in 8 5C twist from Tim North at North Manuf. From order date to delivery date was 3 weeks 4 days. We'll see how it shoots in a week or two.

I got my Mike Rock 5R 1:8 twist about a week ago... it was built in his shop on a CZ action... haven't really worked with it yet but shooting it off the roof of my car it's easy to put em all in one hole.
