F&D Defense FD338 and FD458 sub-sonic 600gr

Over the last year or so I was given the rare and humbling opportunity by F&D Defense to be an “inside” witness through the development and design process of a couple of the finest weapon systems available*today….*

I first started out as an F&D customer, but through a twist of common interests I was afforded this opportunity….

Running parallel and integral with the 338 Lapua Magnum platform, was the design of the EffinDee 458 upper / suppressor system….The concept was to produce a large caliber, high BC, heavy-weigh payload (600 + grains), sub-sonic suppressed, multi-role cartridge capable of engaging targets beyond directional sound signature recognition…hit something with a lotta weight and it not know what direction it came from….

*One of the design hurdles that needed to be overcome was the availability, or lack thereof, of high BC sub-sonic and VLD type projectiles….this was taken care of in short order by Dave with LeHigh Defense…very helpful, with lots of ideas and a working knowledge of sub-sonic efficiencies and expanding/fracturing designs….*

*The cartridge performance with the current offerings in ballistic gel looks great, with mission specific projectiles in development….*From the ground up, every design detail of these platforms was centered around their respective core cartridge….Whether it’s the variable-tuned gas-piston of the 338, or the integral muzzle brake / suppressor interface mount, features are built in that optimize its performance like nothing I’ve ever seen before….
