Can anyone put names on the four color wires coming from my mill so I can re-connect for better success?

This may or may not help but.....
Without knowing anything about what you have, if the motor on the mill is 240v 3 phase, you should have three motor leads and one ground wire. It shouldn't matter which way you hook up the motor leads; the worst that will happen is that the motor will spin backwards. If that happens, switch any two of the leads.
Someone else chime in on the humming.......
