Hybrid 184 or a good one?

I recently got both a M9 and a Buckmaster in a good deal.
Ever since I first saw the BUCK 184 decedes ago, I wanted one.
Back then, it wasnt possible and I've never even handled one.
I've only seen and read about the Buckmaster here and else where, so I have no real frame of reference hence hope the experts here (thats you guys!) can help me out.
Apart from the handguard obviously put on the wrong way and a missing compas, I really dont know how what to look for to determine if this is a good one, a hybrid or an outright fake.
The knife is very heavy with a wiiiide blade and of course the inevitable Rambo DNA with the super wide sawback.
Handle is black, lanyard ring 'in the white,' both anchors work fine. There are some tool marks present on the left side below the saw back on the clip part of the blade. The blade is of a strange mottled apperance.
The knife has obviously never been used. Not only has the dull edge never been sharpened, its completely flat (wich I find kind of strange, if this is a genuine BUCK184)!
Sheath with sharpening stone is marked BUCK under the bottom pouch.
Would anybody have any info about this one, please?
Thanks in advance for any info

The seller, or an other dude, had reverse the hand-guard.
I hope for you that u had not put most that 250 $ on it.

Again, thanks. Im relieved, that its a good one....or at least the real deal, LOL.

How come it didnt come factory sharpened - is that the usual state of affairs?

No, I didnt drop 250$ on this I got this way cheaper than that - the M9 too for that matter.

I see, that they go for considerably more on eflay, but if I can find another one in this condition for the same price, I consider getting one as a user.

I assume my 184 went for an okay price because of the handguard being put on the wrong way. An easy fix.

Hi Scout,

Welcome to the forum.

Your crossguard being an easy fix may not be quite as easy as you think. The grip is held on a threaded tang that projects off the back of the blade. Once the nut is in place and tightened the bottom of the hollow grip is filled with epoxy, encapsulating the nut and making that end of the grip water tight. It's a real tough job to get that epoxy out so you can disassemble the knife.

I suspect that your knife does not have the epoxy. With the raw finish on the blade and the unsharpened cutting edge, I suspect that this knife is assembled from parts that came out of the factory by other than standard means.

That would indeed be a very plausuble reason for it to have the mottled blade and the handguard mounted wrong.
I hope there is no epoxy. Ill see if I can get to the nut, because that handguard will have to be put right - its messing with my OCD

That one is in WAY better condition than my 184 (obviously), but also already way more than I paid.
Would be a great one to keep in pristine condition and then beat the snot out of the ugly duckling I bought first.
Ill keep an eye on the auction for the remaining 22 hours.....

Ebay is not the place to bank on finding a reasonably priced Buckmaster. There are too many people watching. Ocassionally one might get a real steal, but that is much more the exception rather than the rule.

Agreed.
I got a pretty good deal on my 184, but then it wont win any beauty contests....and the guard was on the wrong way.
I noticed that right off the bat of course and as you say, people are watching these auctions like hawks, so they'll have noticed too; guess, thats why it went relatively cheap.
