What conversion makes an ar-15 full auto or illeagl?

When installing an m16 parts kit on an ar-15 whta makes it illegal by class III standards or to fire full auto? If i were to install the m16 trigger, selector switch, disconnector and hammer with j rig do these replacement parts alone make the ar fire full auo or become an illegal class 3 weapon? Or is it essential to install athe gi sear and bore out tohe reciever for it to fit for the weapon to fire full auto or become a class 3 weapon illegal by tf standards? So if i were 2 use these m-16 replacement parts but not possess or install a gi sear am i still in the realm of semi-auto fire and a non class 3 weapon leagal by atf standards? Im asking this because i dont want 2 make the mistake of creating an illegal weapon. Please let me know if u r familiar with the installation of these parts the reaction or change they cause at all in the gun and the legal ramafications of doing so. Another word installing these parts with out a gi sear doesn't the ar-15 remain semiautomatic and a non class 3 weapon?

The BATFE has the opinion that any M-16 parts in an AR-15 could make you have an illegal machinegun. The penalties for having an illegal machinegun include:
  • 10-years in jail
  • $100,000 in fines
  • Federal Criminal record so you can never again own any firearms again

With that said, the law is quite clear that a Machinegun is a weapon that fires more then one round with each pull of the trigger... So, if the parts do not cause full auto fire it really isn't a machinegun. Now, you need to be careful as some states have further restrictions as I know Washington State as one example does not allow any machine gun parts in a semiauto rifle so a simple M-16 carrier could get you locked up in WA state.

The smartest thing to do is save your lunch money for a year or more and buy a legal machinegun. They are lots of fun and when it is legal you can actually take the thing out and shoot it without fear of becoming some dude Buba's boyfriend for the next 10-years of your life or posting some sob story in 20-years how you can't own any guns because you made a small mistake years past.

gi sear

the reason i ask is i allready made the mistake of putting m16 parts in an ar15 and am being charged with possession of a machine gun. although i did not own or install a gi sear along with the m16 trigger kit into the gun. in my state parts alone are not enough to make the charge stick so that is why i really need to know from someone who has firsthand knowledge of ar's will the gun shoot full auto without the gi sear installed or the m16 bolt. thanx

What state are you in? It sounds like you need a good gun savy lawyer.

Well, as suggested above, I don't have pitty for people that play with fire and get burnt... You need to hire an attorney and hang on for the ride...

As for the question about if it will fire more then one round per trigger pull, it depends on the combination of parts you had installed. It is possible to get a un-timed hammer to follow the bolt and if you cycle the action long enough you could get more then one round to go off at least once...

If it happens once and you have machine gun parts installed or you modified the parts such that the possibility exists... well, you made an illegal machinegun in my oppinion...

The said thing is the way the ATF is interpreting the statues varies by the day. And today they read them that having all the parts necessary to make a gun go bang more than once with one pull of the trigger means you have a machine gun.

What parts did you have?

Question

Just for the sake of curiousity, exactly how does the BATF know you have M-16 parts in your AR in the first place? Do they have a search warrant and say, "Let's have a look at the bolt carrier"? Granted if you're out blasting away full auto, I can see someone catching you but otherwise how?
