Crazy M-9 Phrobis 'S' bayonet WITH Buck 188 > Markings

This is another interesting knife that was just posted for sale on EBAY. I have asked the seller if they can send me larger photos but here is the auction:

Edit: Final Price was US $380.00

Descriptin:

Quote:
Bidding is for one VERY RARE "UNISSUED" and never boxed 1987 1st. Generation Phrobis III M9. The blade is marked on the blood groove side "BUCK 188 U.S.A. >" NOTE: Chevron mark was stamped on only the first 1200 made of the 325,000 issued to Army see www.m9bayonet.com/buck-phrobis-m9.html. The opposite side is marked with the early" M" Flat Top "M9 PHROBIS III U.S.A." with a "S" for ARMY ISSUE stamped on the left of U.S.A. Note also the low sweep dog leg 9 that appears only on earlier models. Both handguard & scabbard with "Dolphin" logo mark.Comes complete with accessory pouch, unused sharpening stone and the well known BIANCHI clip. The blade has never been sharpened, other than as factory issue, no scratches but still retains some of the oil residue as seen in the pics.I left this oil on to keep the protection but isn't very attractive so could be cleaned off.I acquired this specimen in 1990 from a retired tool and die maker that worked in the Custom Knife dept. for BUCK-EL CAHON ,CA.
NOTE: I have swapped messages with the seller and he is trying to get me better images of this knife. he has also updated his description based on the information here... the new description says:

I have seen tons of the Duel Buck and Phrobis Marked M9 bayonets but this is the first CRAZY M style due marked M9 I have seen. Now, I also don't know that the sellers claim that this is one of the 1200 as obviously that Chevron was on the Phrobis side of the blade and not the buck side....

Does anybody have more information on this knife?

EDIT: I have uploaded the images from the auction as the photos above will stop working in a few months when ebay deletes them from their system...

I have split the Last Ditch information from this thread and posted it here:

http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=847

It does not mean that this knife is not one of the 2004 knives described in that thread... instead, it is being split as there is no way to verify that it is one of those knives.

Special thanks again for all those that have helped compile this information and possibilities about this very unique Buck-188 knife!

The last group of M9 bayonets that Buck made had bead blasted cross guards and pommels. All other bayonets that they produced had parts with a black oxide finish. This is a very easy way to distinguish between them.

Exclamation Buck M-9

I noticed that auction on ebay to. It is a fake . It is true it is an actual BUCK knife , but it is one made for the commercial market ; it is not one of the 1200 made for the military by contract . The chervon > mark is BUCK's code for the year 1987. Of the 1200, all but 166 were issued by the military; these 166 were not issued due to the fact they had the chevron on the ricasso of the blade, which BUCK had put there w/out the military's approval. Phrobis and BUCK took the remaining 166 and numbered them off. I can't remember off the top of my head, but one took the odd numbered and the other took the evens. BUCK sold their's to members of the BUCK knife club, while Phrobis presented most of their's to dignataries and etc. It would be extremely rare to be able to find one of these in "MINT" condition. 1200-166=1034. This is the number that were issued and used, probably are all worn out and damaged. The knife in question on ebay, I would estimate, would only be worth $250 w/ a "buy it now" price. It is still a rare knife. I hope this helps.

You're correct that it is a commercial bayonet. The seller originally stated that it was one of the original 1200 chevron bayonets but I think most of the regular readers and contributors to this forum knew that wasn't true. What makes it special is the small "S" stamped on the right side of the blade, to the left of the standard markings. $250 is a bit low, I've seen these sell in excess of $500.

It's interesting that there are 166 numbered chevron bayonets and 1034 unnumbered ones and the ones without the numbers are the hardest to find. I've been collecting M9 bayonets since 1987 and have only owned two unnumbered ones but have had as many as eight numbered ones at one time.
