Pulling the trigger on a 184

I have been itching to buy a survival knife. I have a gerber lmf2 and really thought that was a decent knife but looking at some other offers such as the Gerber LHR, buckmaster 184 and a few others. The 184 only worries me due to the age factor. It seems its a dated knife and surely technology has advanced in the last 25 years. Don't get me wrong it looks great and its diffently scary. I think it would be better served in the black versus the bright silver. With the hollow handle can you use it to hammer like the lmf? After using your buckmaster would you ever consider abandoning your buckmaster to use your m9 if your main carry weapon was an AR
