I'm thinking of a medium to medium/heavy countour, relatively short barrel to keep it as handy as possible with a can, 1 in 8" twist, etc.

Would be a great sub-gun as well as a youth doe gun with supersonic loads.

Trying to do this on a reasonable budget and thinking of using the hogue stock.

This will be my first custom build, so any recommendations would be very helpful, and of course pics would make it that much better!

Spook did mine as well, although I got him to spin on a stainless 1-9.5 twist barrel I had laying around since 1-8 really is not needed with 220 and below. #7 contour threaded 5/8x24tpi and 17" oal. Have a 2-8x scope on it now and awaiting a few thing to finish before load deveopment next week. He may have some 1-8 twist tubes laying around he can sell you if you want him to do it. I have a ffl/sot in alabama if you want it ceramic coated like mine also.

The thing with a howa/weatherby action is that you have to cut a relief to get the barrel out and then switch your lathe over to metric to cut the threads, as spook said the other day when I was talking to him it is more than what most smiths want to do with a build.

pic of howa.

Guys, thanks for the responses. I'm starting to get a sense of where I'm going.

TitleII - I like your setup. What stock are you going with? I'm looking at the Hogue - I like them and it seems to be the most inexpensive option. I read a good tip here or on another forum about filling the stock cavity with spray foam to take out the hollow sound.

The factory synthetic (aka cheap plastic) stock that came with my vanguard action will be replaced asap.

Great forum - appreciate everything you guys have shared here to help a newb like me.
