question about 40 moa scope base

hey guys, i have alway used badger 20 moa bases on my long range guns. Now i'm trying to figure out how to get more elevation with my 300 whisper so i can try and shoot to 300-400 yds.

i don't even know if you can answer this, but do you guys know or have you tried a 40 moa base on a whisper. if so, how did it work, and could you get zeroed at 100yds.

i'm pretty sure it would be fine, but i wanted to check before i ordered everything.

my gun is a rem 700, with a leupold mk4 3.5-10x40 on it, and right now it's just sitting in stock leupold rings and base.

I use a 20 MOA base and an NXS 22x with MLR and the answer is, for me, I can get 300 yards.

40 MOA can't hurt!

ya i have the same scope and a 20 moa base on my 300RUM.

but don't know many people that use 40 moa bases. i think i may just go for it and see what happens. but still would like to hear other input out there...?

The main thing you have to worry about is if your scope has enough travel to compensate for the 40MOA, which means, in theory you need about 80 MOA total travel. I don't know the exact travel available in that scope, though I think most of the Leupold MKIV scopes are 90MOA+ of travel.

The only thing you might have to consider is you won't have as much windage adjustment available towards the upper limit of the adjustment range. Hopefully your mount is straight enough that you won't need to much change in windage.

i'm pretty sure the mk 4's have right around 70-72 moa of adjustment. that could end up being a problem. i may call nightforce and see if i could try their 40 moa base, and if it didn't work send it back for the 20moa base?

that would be ideal.

Instead of getting a base for $150 or more. Get some Burris rings that take the inserts and an insert kit. They have 5 moa, 10 moa, and 20moa inserts. You can use one in the front and one in the back for any combination of angle.

Just noticed you have a MK 4. I don't know if they have an eccentric for 30MM

I looked up Leupold's site and they claim 65MOA on their LR/T line of scopes. That is a lot less than I thought, you would probably not be able to use the 40MOA base, you would almost certainly run out of adjustment.

hmm, I'll have to get a hold of burris and see what they say. that's a good idea.

it does look like the 20moa would be the way to go, but it would be fun if those burris rings work to at least try the 40moa and see how it was.
