tutorials

Thanks for the forum. I just bought a 549-2892 sears craftsman lathe. The last time I used a lathe was in high school in 1958. I would really appreciate tutorials on using a lathe in general and how to make cutters in specific.

I just bought a brand new metal lathe. 12x30. Never used one before although I have years of wood lathe experience. I haven't even got the lathe up onto the stand yet..still trying to figure out the logists of lifting that monster . The reason I purchased the lathe is to build my own pen parts, ie pen nib section and thread my parts so nibs can be removed, and for making pens with caps on them.
I would like to see a forum on accessorizing a lathe. The lathe came with only the basics, no cutters, no faceplate, pretty much nothing but a 3 jaw chuck, sliding table thingy and tailstock. Purchasing the proper tooling in the proper order of necessity would be smart. Things you need to get started in metal turning.
I would sure like to see a subforum on threading.
I would like a subforum on tool maintenance.

Maybe a few of these already exist..hey, this is my first time here and first post!

Guys it sounds like what you are looking for is a users group dealing with beginning metalworking. You can try going to yahoo.com and clicking on the groups link on the left. Once in the groups section, type metalworking in the groups search box and it will list groups dealing with all sorts of subjects and you can join whichever ones suits your liking. There are ones for craftsman owners, pen makers and beginning machinists to name a few. Good luck and have fun.

Gear cutting using a lathe.

Hi,
My first post and greetings from a frozen UK.

I'm a member of a forum here in the UK and recently added a thread on a machine restoration which covered a totally new method of gear cutting using a lathe and would like to share my method and experience.

Where would it best be added?

Regards, Col.
