257 Roberts Ackley

Well after 10 plus years not shooting the 257 Roberts Ackley in competition I have screwed a barrel into my AICS and have hit the long range comp again.

The outfit is a AICS with NXS 22x MLR - see the avatar. Barrel is 24 inches.

The load uses 100 grain Sierra MK for about 3300 from a 26 barrel. This combination loads from a 308 mag with no problems.

Accuracy has been good but not great. Looking at my notes it seems that it is still the cartridge I used over 10 years ago - good when you do not know any better but not up to a 284 Win.

Anyone else using the Roberts Ackley for target or tactical shooting?

Just tried the 115 grain Bergers at 600 from this gun - Sierra has a LOT to learn about good Match bullets in 25 cal.

Good groups and score and can still see the bullet track into the target with the 22x NXS.

The story gets better - I spent a Tactical Match using fireforming loads of Varget under 100 grain SMKs. Did not need to adjust out 450 yards using the ranging stadia in the NXS to hold over with a 100 yard zero.

Five shot group at 500, prone from the bipod was 0.75 MOA. This load required 2.5 more MOA of scope adjustment.

Gents,

I've had good luck with the 108 grain bullets from JLK. Give Swampy a call. I'm sure he'd be glad to hook you up. I had to wait about 4 months for mine. Not bad, as I was quoted six months.
