Hello, first i wanna say sorry for my bad english grammar, my schooltime is long ago so i donīt write a lot of english. I own 2 M9īs. One Crazy M9 in used condition and one generation 4 like new! Where can i see the differentiated between Gen. 1 and Gen. 2 to know what generation my crazy 9 is???

I wanna know who is or was equipped with the M9??? Only NCOīs or officers??? In my hometown Idar-Oberstein, Germany, (near Baumholder 1. Armored Divison "Hell on wheels") we have a lot of GIīs and you can see them everywhere when they run or train or if you drive thru their housing. But you mostly see the GIīs with the M7.

Can anybody explain why the M9 is so rare in the Army?? And who is equipped with it????

Well, I am no expert on who gets the M9 in the service except to say that this is a general issue piece as opposed to an NCO item.

As for your M9, if it is a Crazy 9 it is a second generation Phrobis. The first generation knives are the Chevron marked Phrobis blades...

Thank you for your help Quarterbore!!!

So you mean that everybody could be issued with a M9 in the Army, no mater if he or she is a PFC a SGT or a Lt. ???

Sorry that i donīt see the difference between 1st and 2nd generation of Crazy M9īs .
The difference ist the ">" behind the USA mark.

But if anybody else can help me with that "Who was issued with a M9" problem, I will be thankfull for every post!!

Hi Joker,

When the M9 was first adopted, it was intended for actual combat units, such as Rangers, Airborne, infantry and combat engineers. It has seen a little wider usage over the years, with the M9 being seen in some support units, artillery etc. The M7 bayonet is still widely issued, but it does seem to be in decline as a lot of them are being sold as surplus in the US. To muddle the issue, the US Marine Corps tested the M9 in some numbers, but has now adopted a totally new bayonet. Judging from the numbers of USMC M7's I see for sale in surplus auctions from Marine bases, I would say the USMC is quickly getting rid of the M7.

As far as who gets an M9 in a unit, it is issued to any soldier who is also issued an M16 rifle or M4 carbine. There is no distinction in ranks. An officer would get the same bayonet as a private.
