Has anyone ever come up with a fix for the Rem700?

I haven't been on the board for awhile, but yesterday I decided to dust off my 300W and start shooting it again. I have a Rem 700VS with a Douglas barrel.

My search came up empty, but perhaps I missed something.

Has a definitive fix ever been found for the lousy ejection habits of the Rem 700 in 300 Whisper? One of the reasons I haven't shot my Remmy in quite some time is because I was sick of it pulling the empties out of the chamber, but then lamely letting go of them before they ejected clear of the loading port.

That's Funny

I have just the opposite problem. it ejects just fine, but will not ramp. i use Lake City brass and 220 SMK. fill the mage well and close bolt, I have to push the rounds down then release really fast. that ramps the first. The second same thing.

The real issue here is that many actions will have the same issue. The spent case clears the chamber and comes off the ejector.. I have same issues with Savage. Im contemplating a CZ build as they have a Much better extractor...

I'm working with a Howa action that seems to function flawlessly in both directions....M-16 type extractor, sends the cases into orbit.

Would maybe putting a weaker spring behind the ejector or cutting a few coils work? Then it wouldn't be pushing the case off the boltface and free from the extractor as hard?

That is funny, in a non-funny kind of way. I'm not sure who has it worse...either way we are both having to stick our fingers in the action when we shouldn't have to be.

Your problem is an easy fix and common in Savage rifles. The magazine spring is weak or partially collapsed. Stretch it out a little bit so it applies more pressure and your feeding problems are gone. This almost always fixes the promblem, but sometimes requires the spring to be replaced.

This one is more complicated but any competent smith should be able to fit it.

I'd start by 1st making sure that extractor is clean and sharp so that it gets a good grip on the brass. There are many that are dirty and are the blame for poor extraction. Use a pick to get under the extractor to remove any debris/dirt/brass. You might be done right here.

Once clean if it still won't extract and remove the chambered brass, a weld can be applied then machined into making the extractor larger.

If you weaken the ejector spring like you suggested you might have brass hanging up half way out the action and fail to clear the bolt for the next round. (not suggested)

My 300w was originally a 223 tikka M595 MS and it came with a 308 type extractor so it was doing the same thing--pull and let go before eject. Basically there was too much gap from the bolt face to the extractor hook.
I actually ended up making my own extractor but someone else with the same problem had his local shop order the correct one and it worked fine.
Does this 700 work with 223 brass? I'm not sure if 700s come with the same extractor for all the calibers or not. I doubt it.

As J.D. Jones explained to me

Several years ago I talked with J.D.Jones about making a bolt action .300 whisper and he told me to use almost any action but a M-700. He explained it had to do with the combination of the extractor design and the internal geometry of the action behind the chamber. It opens up in diameter for a longer distance before reaching the ejection port allowing the ejector to "function" too soon resulting in the brass staying in the rifle. (The .223 is just long enough for this not too happen) I don't know how a .221 Fireball functions in the 700 from the factory, if it does look to Remington for what they do.
I posted this information before and had someone insisted his 700 functioned fine and I "didn't know" what I was talking about. All I can say is J.D. has far more experience converting guns than I. And while I am glad someone got lucky with a mix of manufacturing tolerances that gave him no problem, the rest of us must resort to "finding a fix" for it.
