Help on sizing/lube die

Got a noe 311247 mold,, made some medium hard slugs, then got some pure lead and made several.
Picked up a used die for the ancient lyman and it si 308. I tried sizing the pure lead and it oboterated every slug,, they got like 1/10 inch into die.
Ran s hard cast bullet and it only went in part way--- tghew clincher is that the lubrication grove was reduced to less then the size of a human hair.
Do I need a 309 or a 310 die?.
Anybody else have any experience with 311247.

Depends on the groove diameter of your barrel. Mine was made by Douglas and it really does measure 0.308". Therefore, I used a 0.309" sizing die for the 311-247 bullet.

You should take one of the pure lead bullets and hammer it through the bore with a brass rod. This is known as slugging. Take a micrometer and measure the outside diameter the bullet after forcing it through. Odds are high it will be 0.308" but might be larger. Whatever number you get, add 0.001" to it. This will be the minimum diameter bullet you should shoot. Many guns find even better accuracy with 0.002" or even 0.003" over the bore diameter. I size to 0.309" for my guns and it works great. Odds are almost zero that a lead bullet sized to 0.308" will work for accuracy or not leading the barrel.

As an aside, I would not use the Lyman style lube dies. Use a Lee push through die. The long length of this bullet allows it to bend during sizing. This will prevent chambering. Ask me how i know. I had to melt down those 100 bullets.

thanks for the input, loaded a 247 in a primed case, and tried to chamger it... a little tight and the lRGE DIAMEWTER got smashed inthe throad,,, have yert to mike it..... thinks I wil go with the push thru Lee dies.

Be advised, the Lee die does not lube; it just sizes.
