just complete this exercise on my atlas/craftsman. what saved me was taking a video of every stage of the dissassembly. (the last remaining allen screw that holds the housing on is under the guide plate - so take that off as a first step). Take the entire gear box off without removing any shafts.
I would strongly encourage getting the CD from quarterbore and print out the manual as this gear box is covered in the CD I got from him - it has a wealth of good diagrams to assist.
Also, when putting back together - there is a separation ring groove on the shift/lever shaft that has to go in the way it came out. Or, once the lock ring is in place, it will prevent your levers from sliding into place for thread selections. (I put it in backwards the first attempt).
The pictures before are a real help since the lock rings have to be locked into certain positions for correct gear alignment.
I sectioned off a work bench of about 3x4' and laid the parts out in exactly the order they came off, so reassembly was a reversal of the process.
took a day to dissassemble and clean, then 1/2 day to put back together and get back on the lathe.
Hope this helps. good luck.
