Anyone know a way to make a ballistic gel like substance cheaply? I know you can do the whole wet newspaper thing but I wana see what kind of wound cavitys these heavy subs make.

There used to be some recipes online using gelatin and cinnamon oil. Cabalas also sales a reusable kit.

I have ballistics gel I can test them for you. Ballistics gel really doesn't show wound cavities because it doesn't hold its shape when it expands. It will show you how the bullets expand if at all and how deep it will penetrate.

My understanding was that it does show wound cavities because it expands and contracts similar to tissue. In fact, it was my understanding that was the point in ballistics gel, is that not correct?

alorton,

You are correct. I was trying to get across that a lot of people want to see the wound cavity expanded out like clay does when you shoot it. When ballistic gel collapses back down it is sometimes hard to even find the bullet path let alone tell what the wound cavity is like. I will be the first one to admit I am no expert with ballistics gel. I just got this stuff and have only shot about 50 rounds into it. I have lost about a half dozen bullets in it. I know I hit the gel because the bullet went threw the target on the front but I sure cant find were the bullets went.

The bullets I was shooting were FMJ so that didn't help.
